| 5735 | 2000-08-05 13:45:00 | I downloaded and installed the SR1 update for my MSOffice 2000 from officeupdate.microsoft.com. When I now want to open Word, Outlook or any of the other Office applications, they open up alright but they terminate themselves immediately and I am back to my desktop. I can't keep any of these programs open. All my other programs work fine. Any ideas why this happens and what can I do to correct this problem? Thanks, Hans |

| 5738 | 2002-11-24 20:13:00 | This general type of problem seems to have come up a few times before. A common is to ask if the copy is "legal" (=non-pirated? and/or entirely complies with Microsoft's or whoever's terms and conditions. I remain a bit puzzled about the implications of this question. Is there a suggestion that Microsoft has built into its updates a feature that stops the software from working properly if it does not meet certain unspecified criteria ?Or does it imply that any pirates weren't very good at their job? Or does it imply something else? Now I have no problem at all with Microsoft protecting their software, in fact I strongly approve of this. But, and a big BUT, Microsoft software has its many problems no matter how legal the software is. It would help users such as myself greatly to have a better idea in specific cases whether causes of software failure are due to pirating, or due to Microsoft's overzealous protection attempts which result in legal software not working properly, or due to the software being poorly designed (even if legal), or due to the user (somehow) not using legal softare properly, or due to hardware inadequacies or whatever. I personally have found frequent BSOD's very frustrating with my very legal Win98, and the frequent plaint by by very legal WinXP that "this program has had an unexpected problem and must close, you will lose all your data (real tough sh**)". Could pirated software be worse than this? |
