1265630 2012-03-18 02:26:00 OK I have done something stupid – why I didn’t have the courage to be a big boy and buy a Mac I don’t know but at my advanced age am too old to get a new OS installed in the slowing brain. This is equally dumb because we are a 2 iPad, 2 iPhone household.
Anyway the 3 year old PC was struggling with the new Pinnacle 15 Video editing software and family IT sons said – just upgrade so stupid old dad did. Got a very flash unit built – Intel i7 2600, 3.4 GHz, 16 Gig RAM, 250 Gig SSD and 2 x 2 TB HDDs and Win 7 Pro.
That was easy bit and from past experiences with Windows knew I was in for a rough few weeks getting the beast knocked into shape.
This is a list (so far) of what have been through.
Windows “Easy” Transfer – “insufficient disk space for files selected” – of course it was trying to install everything onto the 250 GB SSD. No way that could find a way to change that – bulletin boards no assistance.
Ok – use the local network – ha ha! “you do not have permission to access etc etc – contact your network administrator to request access”. This was despite being logged in as Administrator with both PCs and all files marked as shared. Many posts on the bulletin boards provided no respite.
Plan B worked – transferred everything via a 2 TB USB drive!
Outlook 2010 – “the Outlook data file is already in use in the current profile”. After much time wasting eventually got it to acknowledge that it had never ever seen any data before.
GMail accounts – 2 of those and still not resolved – will not show up in the Outlook main InBox – again many many posts on several bulletin boards produced nothing.
Ok have a very old copy of Corel Draw but it has worked fine on another W 7 PC. Windows “Help” keeps popping up. After quite a few posts a very switched on poster came up with the link that have to install a Windows exe Help file – that fixed the Corel Draw problem – guess what – about once a day getting that dreaded blue screen.
Have not solved that problem yet and still a some software to install. Sigh.
When got the iPad – mail was set up in minutes as was everything else. That is why the market Cap of Apple is now twice that of Microsoft and this MOST DEFNITLY IS MY LAST PC!!

1265632 2012-03-18 03:18:00 Even so, it sounds like a great PC. 16GB of RAM, wow. I didn't know there was that much. Richard (739)
1265633 2012-03-18 08:47:00 Yeah, ok, with all due respect, do you think it may be your lack of knowledge that is the biggest problem here.?

As a rule of thumb, whenever I build a new PC for a client I make sure I set it up and they are 100% happy before I leave. That includes setting up email accounts and transferring/importing messages, contacts, calendar, etc. Transferring all documents, pictures, music, etc and re-installing any 3rd party software they had on the old PC (where possible). Etc, etc. It saves a hell of a lot of stress with the client, all they need to do is use it and get to learn whats different as they go - but all their familiar programmes and links are there.

A computer should be an asset, not a liability.

It sounds like a really nice system from the specs. My concern is that you are getting the BSOD about once a day and wonder if there is a hardware fault there somewhere (do you know if it was "burnt in" by the person/company who assembled it?), or is there an issue with some software (corrupt installation, or compatibility issue in Win 7 64bit?). Are all the latest WIn 7 updates installed?

I also dont see how you can compare the setup with setting up an ipad. Comparing a tablet to a desktop computer is a bit like chalk & cheese to me.

If I was coming down to Q-town for Easter, I would happily help you get it up to speed, but we are going north instead this year.

I have set up more macs then I can remember, and yes it is almost as straight forward as setting up an iPad. So comparing a tablet to a desktop is legitamate when it comes to setting up

Why the hell would you want a Mac? And owning ipads etc isn't a reason.

External drive backups and transfers are the best way anyway.

Disable UAC, at least until after you have installed your software. It's amazing what that cures. - From experience.

Totally agree with all that - it sounds more like it was never setup from the start.

Very Nice system, I wish mine was that powerful :)

BUT as Ian points out, with all due respect - It may be a lack of knowledge, not the actual system, thats assuming it was built and installed correctly.

You mention some problems and cant find answers - so lets go through a couple:

1. Windows easy transfer -- Would never use it, as Pctek mentioned - copy data to external drive then copy back to new PC - Easy Transfer eh! You need to reinstall programs, but data is simply copy/paste.

2. "you do not have permission to access etc etc – contact your network administrator to request access” -- There are many articles written on setting permissions fully, I myself have posted several times here - only have to search, once you set a couple of permissions, generally there is no problems. That one permission generally pops up when a share is not done fully (its actually a two stage operation) for security reasons. As well as disable password protected sharing.

3.Outlook 2010 - Simple --- Open old outlook, export the pst file- open outlook 2010 on new PC, create the account, import the previously saved pst file. The only time I seen this fail is when the old pst file is corrupted, or an account has not been made in the first place.

4.GMail accounts – 2 of those and still not resolved – will not show up in the Outlook main InBox --- They wont - in Outlook, it will create a new set of folders for each account. ( see pic below) I have masked details and collapsed the main account but it clearly shows two accounts.

5. Ok have a very old copy of Corel Draw but it has worked fine on another W 7 PC - Thats very common, old programs dont always work on a new OS, esp with 64bit and possibly that much memory, you may find its simply not compatible with a modern machine.

The BSOD sounds like its to do with the Old corel Draw and the "fix" installed, by the way you wrote it - if so thats not surprising. I've seen countless times a computer working perfectly, then something corrupts when the user has done something and damaged the system, when it was working fine before.

Just curious -- you mentioned the "Family IT sons" -- if they knew what they were doing then why didn't they help their father set it up ?

1265638 2012-03-18 21:01:00 Wainui's post is great for some ideas of where to go to resolve the issues. At least you weren't trying to transfer entire profiles, apps, content and settings between different iPad/iPhone devices. Ever tried to migrate from, say, an iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4S? You'd have to jailbreak both devices and use some 3rd-party software to do so, and even then it's a pain in the ass... inphinity (7274)
