1242421 2011-11-08 02:42:00 I tried to search on VHD - it said the word must have 5 letters

This is quite a limitation - it's unlikely anyone would write VHD out in full

Hopefully Jen is right:

"Yeah, it doesn't search on short words (3 lettered). This is something the IDG website gnomes can hopefully look into when they return from the Christmas break."

1242422 2011-11-08 03:06:00 I doubt they would change that - would make the indices h-u-g-e!

just think of a better keyword(s) for what you are looking for

....or use google to search the site for the 3 or 4 letter words if necessary :)

1242423 2011-11-08 03:24:00 How about that. I ran into the same restriction today for the first time when I was searching for UPS. Again, no one tends to write it out in full.

As bevy121 has essentially pointed out I don't see why sites even try to index and provide a search facility for their own sites. Google's external search usually does a way better job.

1242424 2011-11-08 04:26:00 We used to have a custom Google search bar on the forum that searched the PC World sites - must have gone walk-about in the last upgrade. The only problem with that was it searched the entire PC World site so you got blogs, articles and everything else in the search. Jen (38)

Brilliant. Worked a treat.

VHD works a treat too. I used it to inspect an old Windows 7 Image Backup that I no longer have the hardware for, looking for a Thunderbird profile that I omitted to copy.

I got that going, detached the VHD, then realised I hadn't backed up Filezilla server data. So re-attached it and got that too. It's so easy. Why haven't I been told about it before?
