USB 2.0 Limits transfer speeds to around 40MB/sec in practice and this is right around the average transfer speed of a slower hard drive. I have copied entire 1TB hard drives over both USB 2.0 and eSATA when rebuilding my PC and the difference is very noticeable. I also have a HDD dock with both USB 2.0 and eSATA connections and can tell you the same hard drive in the same dock is much faster over eSATA than USB.

I just did some testing also, using HD Tach's sequential read test:

My USB3.0 Flash drive benchmarks at 150MB/sec (kingston data traveller G2 32GB USB3.0 :) )
The same flash drive gets 35MB/sec when plugged into a USB 2.0 port
My intel 320 SSD peaks at close to 220MB/sec but drops as low as 160
My WD Black 1TB data drive is a slow curve from 130MB/sec down to 70MB/sec
My Samsung 1TB backup drive is similar to the WD black but goes from 100 down to 50
And my "slow" data drives, the WD Green 2TB model both test at 120 down to 70

Even the slow drive gets a burst reading of 225 MB/sec
This is by no means an exhaustive comparison, but it does highlight that USB 2.0 is far slower than internal SATA drives (which perform the same as eSATA) and USB 3.0

It's possible your tests were limited by the write speed of you target drive or by other factors.

1241619 2011-11-04 21:17:00 Nah . . I think those results off my standard HDDs were as good as what I can get . They are Barracuddas . Re: USB2 . I also tested a SATA (1?) 2 . 5" laptop HD that was not that much slower 1m 45 and a 2000 era laptop HD (IDE) 2m 15 .

Using eSATA connector the laptop's SATA was 36sec compared to the 3 . 5" SATAs of 30sec's .

I have heard that people say speed is more affected in USB2 than eSATA and why some want USB3 . . . . .

Even if I had the choice, I probably won't upgrade to USB3 or anything else, unless it was provided on the system  Don't use it enough . Maybe a few times a year when I copy a hd image across to be burnt onto DVD . If I was renovating, I may use Category 6 cable instead of 5 though .

:D :D Well, at certain states of the lunar flux visitors are sometimes permitted.

I thought those were the dangerous times?
