1242041 2011-11-06 19:21:00 More sobering to think a proposal is being put forward to raise the Motorway Limit to 80mph which would mean cars flying past lorries 20mph (32kph) faster. Although lorries over 7.5 tonnes would still be banned from the outside lane. Then again most NZ drivers as you rightly pointed out would have the competancy to cope. driver (16592)
1242042 2011-11-06 19:34:00 It's not the "flying past the lorries" that's the problem it's when a couple of lorries come barrelling onto the motorway with no intention of slowing down. At 70mph the UK drivers seem to cope by easing up on the overtaking and making room. At 80 there could be a few more chain reactions. PaulD (232)

As far as I'm concerned, distractions to drivers are part of the conditions. If you're driving in a situation with poor visibility, increased braking distance, and distracted drivers, more caution than normal should be shown. I'll be interested to find out if a stray firework hit one of the burned-out trucks.

The majority NZ roads are higher speeds as in a higher speed limit than their counterparts in the UK did you not realise that? And thats the thing most of our roads you can not drive at the speedlimit either.

Yes, I do realise that. I'm not advocating increasing speed limits, but pointing out that the roads themselves are, in many cases, not the deciding factor in speed limitations, but the expectations of driver behaviour on said roads. Moreso than any of the other countries I've driven in, NZ drivers seem to be polarised into the unconfident slow-poke and the overconfident hoon. Many of our roads, the road itself could quite safely support a higher speed limit, but due to traffic volumes, driver behaviour, etc, it is not necessarily safe to rate it so.

1242044 2011-11-07 10:25:00 So the evidence coming in indicates that there was a heavy plume of smoke over the motorway giving the illusion of fog and a sudden visibility change to zero. Not easy to spot from a distance at night either.

The fire was most likely the result of the impacts with ruptured fuel tanks and a source ignition eg battery oreven a cigerette. One the Trucks was from a firm called ginsters which is a pie manufacturer from cornwall. Quite surprised how gutted that was by fire!

The fireworks had actually just finished before the accident.

It might be better to qoute where that qoute was refered to and has been overtaken by replies to that post since. See post above your!

1242047 2011-11-08 08:55:00 My son over for a holiday from UK. "Most vehicles are doing 80mph (126kph) on the motorways". If the limit was increased to
80 mph they would probably go to 90mph. When the first multiple pile ups occured on the motorways in the UK
I remember Lucas bringing out 18 watt rear red fog lights as fitted to that horrible Marina. Not seen
anymore (the light ie)

1242048 2011-11-08 22:38:00 I learned this morning that one of the truck drivers killed was someone I used to go to school and also worked with .

I will admit to this I never really liked motorway driving in the UK because it was boring and the rest areas a fair distance apart . Living in the South west the Motorways ended at Exeter so contact with them was limited to the work run north . When we used to go to London we always used the A30/303 duel carriegeway rather than the longer M5/M4 route only near London did we join the M3 or M25 .

Just as gradedban said raise it to 80mph and motorists will push to 90mph just like they try to push 110kph and many think 120kph is acceptable on our joke motorways .

You hear people spurt about better safety and braking of a modern car! Yet the same laws of physics still apply! Plough into an object at speed and the faster you go the lesser the chance of survival and the longer you need to be apply to stop before hitting .

1242049 2011-11-08 22:50:00 The faster you go the bigger the mess, its physics. Increase the speed in NZ with our bad roads, ethnics driving un WOFed cars and mountainous topography will just cause more deaths.I dont care if the poms raise their speed limit to 250 mph, dead poms have never been a concern of mine after I found out they shot some of our soldiers in France. prefect (6291)

This really bothers me.
Why don't we have a couple of dozen more cameras similar to the ones on Northern Gateway Toll Road, that look up your rego and wof and send out fines to the offenders?

I am sure the government could make a pretty penny there.

Hell, put one on every major road. They'll pay for themselves.

They can also probably be put to good use to track stolen cars and all sorts of crooks.
