1265510 2012-03-17 20:28:00 When I go to fire up from sleep mode, or start up, the monitor just makes a funny "click" type noise when I press a key or mouse button.
I've checked the cable, it's fine.
This is most annoying.
Anyone got an idea, what I should do to fix it?

1265511 2012-03-17 20:34:00 Does it actually ever get to the point of running normally ??

Reason for asking is I have a customers PC here doing a similar thing, try to start it, makes all the right sounds, but the monitor goes click and thats it. The mother board has a fault - put all his components in a good board and it worked perfectly - his board = :groan:

1265512 2012-03-17 21:06:00 Yes, eventually it does. A few weeks ago, it was a minor nuisance, took say 5-10 minutes before the monitor worked. Now it's more like 20 minutes.
The computer works though, as at one stage I kept pressing windows-e and when it worked I had all these windows on screen. Also, if I sqiggle the mouse around, it's surprising what's been opened from the desktop.
Your comment about the mother board is interesting, as this machine is due for an upgrade. But I'd like to be sure that's the problem before I charged in.

Yes, I just tried that. I plugged the cable into my linux server, and instantly got all the boot-up stuff.
I also plugged it into the on board graphics on the windows machine in question, and absolutely nothing, I heard the little "ding dong ding" sound come through, but I couldn't even get that little blue light that comes on in the bottom right hand corner.
So I plugged back into the graphics card, and the monitor worked instantly? It's really puzzling, but at this stage, my guess would be a faulty mother board?

1265515 2012-03-17 21:57:00 I just did another restart. The monitor worked perfectly. I suppose I should wait and see what happens after sleep mode or shutdown for a few hours.
Thanks wainuitech and KarameaDave.

1265516 2012-03-17 22:06:00 A similar thing used to happen on these. I had to open the case and press the videocard in, so it made contact properly. The computer was fine, but nothing appeared on the monitor. In the end, I used a rubber on the contacts. It hasnt happened since. Dont know if this has anything to do with ATI cards. Since both of these have ATI cards Speedy Gonzales (78)

I also plugged it into the on board graphics on the windows machine in question, and absolutely nothingif you have onboard graphics and a Video card, the Video card usually has to be removed other wise the Onboard wont work.

A Ha! I didn't think of that one. I seem to remember I had to disable the on board graphics in the bios, or something when I installed the video card.
The trouble is, I don't do this sort of stuff often enough to drive it home - I soon forget.

1265519 2012-03-19 21:10:00 I bought a new monitor yesterday (something I've been promising myself for a while now, and I had a Christmas gift card). I thought I'd see how things went with dual monitors. I connected the new one with the HDMI cable, and left the old one with the DVI cable. The new monitor fired up instantly and the old one just clicked away for ages (same old problem).
To me, this indicates a video card fault, or a monitor fault.
