6131 2000-08-31 23:21:00 I am trying to put a new hard drive into my friends compaq 486dx100 pc. It has 48mb of ram, and was running win98. It did have a fujitsu 6.4gb hard drive, but scandisk reported bad sectors etc, and data kept disappearing so a new seagate 10.2gb hard drive was bought to replace it with. The only problem is that when installed, the pc shows the following error code: '1790 disk 0 error' and then when you boot it anyway and try to run fdisk etc it won't recognise the existence of the hard drive. I have tried to format it in another machine, and this works, and I have even preloaded windows so that I could see if it would be recognised when bootable but it still isn't recognised. The hard drive is set as master, and due to the motherboard set up, the cd rom is set as slave on the same cable as there is no secondary IDE channel for the cd rom drive. Taking out the cd rom drive has no effect - the hard disk still isn't recognised. Is there a conflict between the type of hard drive and the system, or is there something else wrong? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Guest (0)
