6194 2000-09-04 09:17:00 I plan to format the hard drive of the kids' old 486DX2-50 computer but there is a file that I am not sure about: '386spart.par', size 27,616 KB. In an old issue of PC World (July 1997) it identifies this file as a permanent swap file for Windows 3.x or used for virtual memory in Windows 95. This machine began life with Win 3.11 (or something) then was upgraded to Win95, then Win95b and this file was only noticed after the upgrade to Win95b when a new hard disk was put in by a shop.

The file appears to be essential to the running of Windows and because it is always in use I can't back it up (to another machine) by copying it while in Windows and its size prevents me copying while in DOS (ie too big for a floppy!) Does anyone know if Windows will replace it after formatting and reinstalling Windows or would it have been put there by the shop? Would it even have anything to do with enabling an old BIOS to access the contents of a larger hard drive (up from 365MB to 2.1GB)?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
