i am trying to install a 2nd hard drive in my 486 DX 4/100. i have set the jumpers so that I have a slave and a master and the master is the last connection on the IDE cable. With both drives installed the BIOS will autodetect both drives correctly. The original drive is a 540Mb Fijutsu and the 2nd drive a 1.2Gb Quantum. Each drive will boot up correctly if it is jumpered as master and the other drive is disconnected, or I tell the BIOS there is only 1 drive. But with both drives connected it will not boot up , even from a floppy. I have tried interchanging the drives with no difference. My next attempt will be to try with both drives set to cable select or to install a drive as master on the secondary IDE channel and reconfigure the CD ROM as slave. any other suggestions ?? Please. I have searched previous answers and seem to have tried all the suggestions offered. |
