I have bought a Compaq LTE 5280 Laptop (P120, 32MB RAM running Windows 95B) for my son but I can't get the sound working. It has an ESS ES1688 Plug & Play Audio Drive which the Device Manager is showing as 'Device not present, not working or not all drivers are loaded'. I have loaded the latest drivers from Compaq, run the Compaq diagnostics from DOS (sound card tested OK & made test noises) and remove the device from Device Manager & got Windows 95 to re-detect & re-install it but still no sound. Resources show I/O=220, IRQ=5 & DMA=1, anyone have any idea where to look next?
