2011-11-13 05:39:00 | I bought a Bluray drive back in Dec 2008. It was one of early ones out by Sony One thing i HATE about Bluray drive is it takes so freaking long to read boot and do just about anything. Using the remote control to do things seems like trying to watch youtube on dialup This holiday season i am planning on buying another bluray drive, IF the news ones are faster. Does anyone know if the more recent ones are faster in loading booting and doing other functions then previous generation drives ? Also i like to know why bluray drives are sooo slow compared to say DVD drives? Cheers

2011-11-13 07:44:00 | I bought a Sony BD player in Feb. 2010. When I want to watch Avatar BD it takes nearly 5 mins before I can watch the movie. Don't know what it does, makes a few funny noises like it is searching for something. It is connected to the internet by WiFi and automaticly updates the firmware. I have other BD disks that don't take so long before you can watch them. :)

2011-11-13 08:46:00 | Seems to be the same with Philips BR players too. The one I've got had a firmware update for Avatar BR as well. Don't know if the update fixed the BR version tho. I don't have it. I wouldnt use wireless for updating tho. If it cuts off or something, it'll probably kill the player | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2011-11-13 20:24:00 | I recently bought a Sony Blu-Ray player and it takes about 30-60 secs to power on and get ready. Possibly longer with BR discs than DVDs. I think the faster booting is to do with the processor in the player rather than firmware. If you get a newer player, it should boot quicker than your old one.

2011-11-13 21:50:00 | I have one of these, can't say I've timed it, but it seems about what I'd expect, DVDs have never been the fastest things around anyway. www.lg.com Edit - sorry, just realized, not sure if you are talking about a PC drive or a 'normal' blu-ray player?

Cheers The first difference that should be noted in a DVD vs Blu-ray discussion is that DVD's are Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) and Blu-ray is Constant Linear Velocity (CLV). CAV: The drives transfer rate is variable. Information on the inside tracks of the disc is read at approximately half the speed as the information on the outside of the disc. CLV: The drives transfer speed is linear or constant regardless of whether information is on the inside tracks of the disc or the outside. |

2011-11-15 07:21:00 | well, that clears that up. I personally have found it dependent on disc, and a quick google usually shows that movies that are stubborn to play have some heavy encryption on them to annoy consumers who pay for their media but has zero effect on piracy. The latest X-men movie is a case in point, thanks for nothing ********s.
