1242996 2011-11-15 07:15:00 What I don't get is why our supposedly esteemed finance minister didn't see the NZ downgrade coming (his own words). WTF was he doing then that's what he is paid to do look after the countries finances, see these things coming and do something about them. But no did he see it coming of course not he had his head too far up JK for that

Perhaps he doesn't work at the company that changed the rating and wasn't privy to the information any sooner then the rest of us?

I'd imagine his job isn't easy considering the world wide recession and the mess that Labour left the books in.

Maybe they can sell the trains, oh wait, worthless.

Quite right Metla, remember you are responding to a leftie, so there will be an element of wall talking.

Even if they were worth something (which they are :p), I don't want to see KiwiRail, or any asset, flogged off again.

1242999 2011-11-15 17:59:00 It seems to me that public transport will always need a subsidy, therfore I think it should remain in public hands, run as a SOE, with the boss made to be responsible for his action via a contract. Cicero (40)

No, it wont always require a subsidy if it can be made to work. You have to make it a service that people want to use, and there is no way people will use it while it is faster and cheaper to get people and goods from A to B via road or air. The only thing rail has at its advantage at the moment is shifting large amounts over a large distance, this works great for Solid Energy (coal), Fontera (milk, solids, etc), forestrys and the like, but our railsystem is so run down, without major investment and while the Govt keeps pooring money into roading, it will never turn a profit. Rail traffic is on the increase world wide, it is here as well, but not as fast as it should be if there was decent infrustructure and service.

what crap, that's what he is employed to do steer the countries finances and see these things before they happen. It would have been better if he didn't admit they he didn't see it coming. So how come the whole world knew that American was going to get downgraded?

As to Cicero's comments about being left. I don't consider myself to be either left or right I vote with how I feel each successive government has done. I have voted Labour in the past but this time will not be as I don't consider they can do any better and will actually do worse. National have done a pretty good job in the current climate but they still need to be on their toes as there are things they could do better.

He is Zoltar?

Out of all the innumerable forces that affect our economy the minister of finance is just a pawn, he can do everything in his power to not make things worse but he can't control squat.

1243004 2011-11-16 00:46:00 The sad truth is New Zealand is in the terms of the world, little more than a pimple. We are all being effected by the Recession/Depression.It's just that the middle class/Lower glass will be suffering more in comparison.Compare not being able to holiday in Hawaii to not having enough food to put on the table.

What this country needs is to work together for the betterment of all...Not just the Bank CEO who gets $5M + per year or the PM with a $10m home but also for the PM's office cleaner who is on $14 per hour. There was a time when Jack was as good as his master not now...if you remove all hope of ever 'getting anywhere' materially you create a under class of no-hopers.This section is growing bigger every day.

SHOW ME THE JOBS... where I can earn a reasonable living, provide food, pay the outrageous power bill/mortage.Plan for the future or my retirement. You say Kiwi's are lousy savers...thats because there is not enough left at the end of the week to bloody well save.

John Key,I'm sick of being told to tighten my belt, sick of light at the end of the tunnel, when you buy bloody BMW's to be driven around in,whilst it's OK for a CEO to spend over $2,000 of taxpayers money for one meal or a multitude of Quango's where your mates get paid outrageous money to produce reports that you totally ignore.Time for a FAIR deal for those not lucky enough to have been born into the right family, not lucky enough to go to the right schools, not lucky enough to be bright enough to make the most of their opportunities. In short bring back the guillotine, the cake is getting stale.
