1242976 2011-11-14 02:58:00 The only time I would be in favour of selling assets is flogging off an unprofitable asset and using those funds to buy something else. pcuser42 (130)
1242977 2011-11-14 03:13:00 Unfortunately selling off unprofitable assets won’t return you much because the prospective purchaser simply won’t offer you much. ;)

HERE’s (www.stuff.co.nz) a link to a good example of the results of selling assets. ;)

1242978 2011-11-14 04:40:00 Selling Assets is just plain stupid .

Look at it this way .

For anyone to buy a business/asset they expect it to pay for itself and to show a decent profit . ;)

Now, if you’re a Government and have a business/asset like say a power station the purchaser believes at time of purchase it is a good investment and will show him good returns .

If that’s not the case, then he won’t be interested in purchasing .

When this country was filthy rich, we had our own Petrol Company (Europa) our own Bank (BNZ) our own Shipping Company (New Zealand Shipping Company) and so on .

All these Assets were sold to delighted purchasers, who made a fortune out of them .

The problem is, whilst they pocketed a fortune, we had to make up for what they were now getting with additional taxes and borrowing .

And to top things off, the Assets like Hydro Stations belong to the people and have been paid for by the people . They have been freehold for years and shouldn’t be sold to outside interests by devious politicians .

Douglas and Prebble sold most of the Silverware and now look where we are .

Do people never learn in this country?
Nailed it !

Correct me if I'm wrong, didnt Bill English try the same when he was prime minister last time (in 2001) and was booted pretty quick, seems to me he is trying it on again and this time he may succeed . :(

1242980 2011-11-14 07:11:00 There's a problem - revenue from asset sales shouldn't be used to fund general maintenance of schools etc., that should come from regular tax.
Which would be ok if we had unlimited tax revenue.
What on earth is wrong with if you are short of dough, selling an asset, it's done all the time in the real world.

Dead right Ian .

God we’ve had some disastrous leadership .

Talk about how to turn a fortune into a small fortune .

Muldoon, Douglas, Prebble, Shipley, Williamson, Clarke, Cullen, English, Key - fill in the spaces at your leisure .

All on an “Ego Trip” and not a “Statesman” amongst them .

Which raises the question, “Who was the last True Statesman who led this country for the Countries Good, not for his Own Good”?

If you own the asset outright you can do as you like with it. Give it away, no problem.

One person’s loss is another person’s gain. :)

But when you start selling other peoples property, the rules change. ;)

Selling an asset to fund a capital purchase is fine, but selling assets to fund revenue expenses is a bit like the local supermarket selling their shelves to pay the rent.
