1242966 2011-11-12 05:52:00 I am not sure National can be trusted and Labour is a sinking ship with no real captain.

Are the Greens a credible choice?

Their socialist attitudes worry me somewhat, giving more and more to the bludgers. sorry beneficiaries.

No

No politicians can be trusted. National (Blue), Labour (Red), Green, or whatever colour are, all the same - a bunch of lazy bums sitting in the Beehive warming their bl*&^# a%$#^. Good for nothing lot

All politicians can't be trusted. however, however, some politicians are more untrustworthy than others. (apologies to George Orwell - Animal Farm)

1242969 2011-11-12 20:02:00 Who said the government had to own anything ?

Most assets depreciate !

In days gone past all the government did was have a customs department they collected most of the taxes.

I hope we stick with National - Could not bear going back to tax and spend and keep beneficiaries on the benefit.
DPB's and most sickness beneficiaries should be helped/pushed back into work !

Well, not really. Most assets in a business depreciate, but the business itself shouldnt if managed correctly. By selling 49% means 49% less profit, of that 49% which is not being reinvested back into the business is going into the big pot and is subsidising our taxes.
The Govt will have to raise taxes in order for it to continue providing the services it does, wasteing a fair amount and giving millions away to other pacific countries etc as it will no longer be collecting it from the state owned business.
Plus a fair amount of that 49% will be bought by overseas investors, meaning much of it will go offshore and not even be spent in our country.
You just have to look at NZ Railways when Toll (Aussie Company) owned it, they ran it into the ground and will take billions to get it back up to the service required of it, Telecom wasnt much better until the Govt stepped back in and told them to start reinvesting back into it.
Selling assests may look good short term, but long term we will be paying for it. Asset sales are not a long term step fowards in my opinion.

1242973 2011-11-14 00:53:00 They are not selling them because they like selling assets, you either borrow, tax or sell something.Pay for school's etc
As long as it is controlled by goverment, then it is ok by me.

1242974 2011-11-14 01:25:00 Pay for school's etc

There's a problem - revenue from asset sales shouldn't be used to fund general maintenance of schools etc., that should come from regular tax.

1242975 2011-11-14 02:06:00 Selling Assets is just plain stupid .

Look at it this way .

For anyone to buy a business/asset they expect it to pay for itself and to show a decent profit . ;)

Now, if you’re a Government and have a business/asset like say a power station the purchaser believes at time of purchase it is a good investment and will show him good returns .

If that’s not the case, then he won’t be interested in purchasing .

When this country was filthy rich, we had our own Petrol Company (Europa) our own Bank (BNZ) our own Shipping Company (New Zealand Shipping Company) and so on .

All these Assets were sold to delighted purchasers, who made a fortune out of them .

The problem is, whilst they pocketed a fortune, we had to make up for what they were now getting with additional taxes and borrowing .

And to top things off, the Assets like Hydro Stations belong to the people and have been paid for by the people . They have been freehold for years and shouldn’t be sold to outside interests by devious politicians .

Douglas and Prebble sold most of the Silverware and now look where we are .

Do people never learn in this country?
