After you settle into any place and are working 50 to 60 hours a week you don't bother heading into the city centers, you just do the grind, same as you did wherever you came from. Yeah ..... still good to look at. I couldn't afford them any way |

There is also a case before the Human Rights Comm or what ever the Australians call it that New Zealanders will require visa's to work as it is discrimination that Kiwi's can enter Australia with out a visa and get work while others from other countries require work or 457 visa's to work. Last I heard about that was it would be at least next year before they would decide on that on. |

New Zealand had it all with respect to residency and a right to citizenship until Helen Clarke had a not too little spat with John Howard - and as a Kiwi I back Howard's point of view. Howard made it quite clear he was not going to tolerate people entering Australia via New Zealand, who would not be acceptable as immigrants to Australia on the basis of a direct application. Helen Clarke was quite reasonably invited to standardise New Zealand immigration requirements in line with Australian, if she wished for New Zealanders to continue enjoying the free access they had. Helen Clarke flatly refused, and as a consequence New Zealanders lost the automatic right of Australian residency, and Australian citizenship if they so chose. New Zealanders still enjoy some residency privileges that that citizens of no other nations have, but thanks to Clarke the good days have gone. I know of several cases of immigrants to NZ from India, who moved permanently to Australia the moment they could legally hold a NZ passport. To put it bluntly, the sole reason they immigrated to NZ was so that they could qualify to move to Australia with guaranteed permanent residency. Economically life is not nearly as good as it was here a few years ago - 4 years of ALP government has seen to that, but it is still better than New Zealand for the average bloke. There is no shortage of work in Queensland for those who want it, and in the resources industry there is great money on offer - trouble is it isn't near the big cities. The awarded of the Commonwealth games to the Gold Coast will create quite a few construction jobs. |

I was in Sydney for a couple years leading up to the Olympic games and it was great work wise. Just applied for a job on the gold coast, Its a perfect fit for my skills and experience, starting base salary of 120k **** me. I'd be filthy rich. I'd be wearing gold plated jeans and singlets. |

Its sort of like Canada versus the USA. I still say that in the end Aussie will price itself off the market. But that will take time. They are lucky that they have those mineral resources miles away from any snails. |

| 1242641 | 2011-11-12 21:57:00 | There was an interesting interview on the nat radio within the last 2 weeks with a NZ Professor of Population studies or similar on NZ citizens moving to australia. He said that the losses on NZer to australia was in reality more or less matched by people form overseas moving to NZ. This was because it is easy for NZ citizens to move to australia with lesser skills. ie lots of stories of NZ moving to work in construction, mining, forrestry. While overseas immigrants wanting to move to NZ had to collect the right number of points so tended to have more qualifications, money etc. Might be worth looking on the national radio site to see if its archived. | 1242642 | 2011-11-12 22:10:00 | Well then, That professor of population is abit of an idiot. Since so many of the working class have left we in NZ are left with the lazy, the incompetent and the inexperienced and the old. Without wanting to insult many many hard working and hugly competent people (I have worked with many and I'm in awe of some of their capabilities and expertise) People from all over NZ have left and they haven't been replaced. Where there should be people coming up through the ranks we have nothing, Instead we have a few older people looking to fill in a few years before retirement and a bunch of unemployable young dick heads. Then you go to Aussie and there are entire companies where every single person onsite is a kiwi, Hard working, smart, and diligent. |
