| 1243576 | 2011-11-16 07:35:00 | Groannnn....this is much harder than I thought. I'll start another thread on whether "support" is necessary. I had a browse around Hardly Normal and Noel Leeming today because I'm a visual and tactile person. Look and touch. 15.6 screens seem to be standard with almost nothing smaller apart from netbooks. A small girl lugging a heavyish laptop around all day seems silly but...don't know if the 13 inch machines are much lighter. Easier to fit in a bag or backpack. I was surprised to find the touchpads are often off-set to the left which I'd find weird to use personally. Is it just something you get used to? The 15.6" screen gives the best flexibility, even for the small disadvantage of the extra weight. The display is clearer and she will be able to watch movies more easily on the days she isn't supposed to be studying. I bought a 15.6" Tosh for my daughter (at Victoria) when her netbook threw a third wobbly (that's a whole 'nother story) and she happily lugs it about with no complaints. I just noticed that the touchpad on my Asus is offset!!! But when I look again , it's probably because there is a full keyboard (NumPad built in) and the touchpad is centred on that. Not that I use it much - I usually use a proper mouse... But when I do use the touchpad it feels natural enough. www.playtech.co.nz On sale ATM Arghhh! Don't you read reviews, icow!!!! STAY AWAY FROM ACER!!! |

| 1243577 | 2011-11-16 07:50:00 | I'd disagree with the "clearer" comment, most cheaper laptops are 1366x768 screen res weather it be a 13/14/15" screen, so I find if you go for a 13/14 you actually end up with a slightly sharper image. | Alex B (15479) | ||

Still, I mentioned this to her and she declared it would be "sad" if she was reduced to sitting in her room watching movies when there were 6000 new students out there to meet and greet. I do think a 15.6 is the best choice. |

| 1243580 | 2011-12-07 10:12:00 | Ok time for an update. I have purchased a machine from PB Tech in Dunedin: a Toshiba L 650 for $848 pricespy.co.nz Allow me to share a pleasant experience. I happened to be in Dunedin because a close relative flew there in the Westpac Helicopter with some heart difficulties. Ie. it wouldn't go. Happily a reboot and lots of good cardiac care indicates a sound recovery. So there I am this afternoon so I toddle off to find PB Tech. There I meet a young man (Ray?) who completely stumped me by drawing my attention away from the i5 machines and encouraging interest in cheaper devices - i3. After various discussions he mentioned the Toshiba extended warranty and then said it wasn't necessary before I could say a word. He was only keen on Toshiba, Asus, and Samsung and indicated he was less than interested in a couple of other popular consumer brands. He didn't even try the Virus/Security elephant explaining the University supplied a program free to students anyway. But if I was interested, Nod32 was only what they sold. I was uber impressed. No hard sell. No upsell. And if it breaks I know where to find him. :D So I have to give big ups to PB Tech Dunedin. |
