| 1243264 | 2011-11-13 23:51:00 | A few years back, in Invercargill, I had an adult paper run which I did on a motor scooter. One morning we had a real heavy frost. After coming off my motor scooter twice I finally decided that it was safer to walk. I could safely walk on the grass verge but it was real slippery crossing over peoples driveways. I was often on my hands and knees. At about 6:30 am I was still struggling to keep on my feet when this young fellow comes walking down the footpath no problem at all. I have often wandered why his feet had a good grip and mine were sliding out from under me. Maybe he was wearing socks on the outside of his shoes. Someone suggested that I buy a pair of golfing shoes so I went out and bought a pair. I never experienced another frost like that again so the golfing shoes were never tested. Maybe the universities need to waste money testing golf shoes on ice so that I know if they work or not. Golf shoes these days probably wouldn't help - they tend to be soft-spike, rather than metal-spike, so being plastic probably wouldn't give much more in the way of grip than ordinary shoes... But the older metal-spikes would have worked a treat on ice, but they become tiring to walk in on hard surfaces after a while (plus you'd go through a lot of spikes in a short time through wear and tear). But probably worth the investment if it stopped sore tailbones!! |
