1267034 2012-03-27 07:06:00 Don't know how I did it but while trying to format and resize an old disk using Win 7 Disk Management I have my main 1TB drive showing Unallocated!!!! However, the system is still working but I am scared to do much, of course .

The top half of the management screen still shows the three partitions as normal .

To save a big restore op, is there a way of undoing the damage?

1267035 2012-03-27 07:12:00 Any chance of a screenshot? It's a little hard to figure out exactly what your disk arrangement is from your post.

If you have actually deleted partitions, testdisk can normally get them back, and will save you the headache of trying to recover all the files.

1267036 2012-03-27 07:19:00 Bit confused how you've managed that, as the Disk Management with Windows won't allow you to delete the system partition, only shrink or extend it. inphinity (7274)
1267037 2012-03-27 07:22:00 I'm surprised you were able to do anything to the system boot partition as it won't let you do anything to it.
I wouldn't restart the machine, if you haven't already done that, as that may force the changes on the restart.

1267038 2012-03-27 07:26:00 I don't want to do any disk writing on the main m/c so can't get screenshot. I am writing this on another m/c.

The disk had (has?) 3 partitions. C: 50GB, D: 30GB and F: 844GB. The lower half of the screen shows the whole volume (935.5 GB) as Unallocated.

Strange that the system is running as normal so all is still in place but I am scared to do much!! Wonder if pulling the plug out will stop the action from being completed?

1267039 2012-03-27 07:32:00 Yes, bit strange it seeming to let me destroy the boot disk. But it hasn't done it (yet!) just shows Unallocated. linw (53)
1267040 2012-03-27 07:40:00 Ah, now I know why the system is still working. It was my backup USB drive that was trashed. The main volume was scrolled out of sight and I didn't notice that I was looking at the wrong drive. Whew.

Oh, well, better get my backups going again!!

Sorry for the alarums.

1267042 2012-03-27 08:20:00 Yea, bit embarrassing! Backups roaring away as we speak!! linw (53)
1267043 2012-03-27 09:53:00 I wasn't aware that Windows had the ability to modify partitions aside from creating or deleting them.

I have always used 3rd party tools but even then you can't always be guaranteed things won't screw up.
