6971 2000-11-05 10:53:00 I am planning to purchase a new 20gig hard drive, but what brand should I choose?

The MAXTOR DiamondMax DM45 Plus 20GB IDE Hard disk Drive *Ultra ATA100 *<8.7ms *7200 RPM *2MB cache.

OR

The Seagate Barracuda II 20Gb, 7200rpm, UDMA 66, 2MB Cache, IDE Hard Drive.

Thanks for any help.

6972 2003-05-30 22:32:00 I have had very good luck with Maxtor hard drives- 4GB, 30GB, and 40GB. But my luck with Maxtor ran out when I tried a new 80GB. And I noticed around the begining of May they shortened their warranty from 3 yrs to 1. WILLWILLWILLWILL (236)
6973 2003-05-30 22:40:00 most drives only come with a one year warranty these days.

Personally I've had no problems at all with any Seagate drives, and I swear by them. Maxtor used to be good but as of late their drives seem to have picked up the habit of dying. It's only really been since Maxtor acquired Quantum that that's happened, and Quantum drives have a terrific reputation for death and data destruction. Western Digital seems to be going strong at the moment...

By the looks of it, you're buying second hand, so either way you're taking a risk. Personally I'd look at the cuda II.. but that's just my pro-seagate bias talking.
