1267969 2012-04-02 06:34:00 Hi all
Through my work I'm supplied a laptop, of course I can't install anything as I don't have admin rights... Is there any way I can work around this as I want to run some other programs but don't want to buy another laptop? Can I install and run programs from an external HDD or should I just swap out the HDD with one setup for my programs?

Any idea's???

Thanks

1267970 2012-04-02 06:37:00 Yes, don't screw with your work laptop, buy your own. At the end of the day it's not yours and you do not own it...... Alex B (15479)
1267971 2012-04-02 06:44:00 You could use a bootable external hard drive but if you don't admin privileges the odds are you won't be able to get into the bios to boot from it.
There is no way you should be installing programs on your work laptop HD.

1267972 2012-04-02 06:49:00 Portable apps would be the way to go loads available, put on a flash drive and run them, no installing needed here (portableapps.com/) or here (http:) gary67 (56)
1267973 2012-04-02 07:04:00 Thanks that sounds like the go... Will it work with my programs or do I have to select from there list??? 4Lowie (10869)
1267974 2012-04-02 07:39:00 In reality you shouldn't be doing stuff like that on a business machine. Of course it does depend on what you are working on, ie, if you have police/govt/sensitive company data on it you wouldn't want to be responsible for any mishaps. Even if it has nothing to do with what you installed you will be on a tight spot since you were mucking around.

As said before, portable versions are good, that or creating a bootable OS on an external HDD (IE when at home boot into your "home" OS and use the work one at work.

What programs were you interested in using, we can probably help find a solution if we know what we are dealing with specifically.

I dont know but I'd say those are the ones that are confirmed to work. Do you have a specific program in mind?

1267977 2012-04-02 07:55:00 Doubt there are portable versions of those as they can be very resource hungry gary67 (56)
1267978 2012-04-02 08:12:00 Don't mess with your work laptop - your employer has put in place the appropriate restrictions for a reason. Furthermore, you should have zero expectation of privacy when using your work laptop; you need to assume that anything you do on it will be monitored by your employer and misuse of company property could be a reason for disciplinary action.

I have a work laptop, and assume that anything I do on it can be viewed by my employer at any time.
