1267684 2012-03-31 23:41:00 Hiya,

I thought at least by now, when there's a growing population of computer users home at home and other devices intergrating onto online, surely there there must be an adsl with more than 4 ports?

I've got a 4 port adsl modem and a switch with 8 ports. I took on the belief that if you can expand your network you can do it this way. I found out I couldn't do this because when I tried to expand my network for other rooms in my house, those that were connected to the switch failed while the ones still connected to the adsl modem were still able to get the internet.

So does this mean, I need two adsl modems instead of one adsl modem and a switch to expand my network?
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Note:
I don't have wireless. I can have wireless communication (since my adsl2 modem is also wireless), but because of the age of my computers, it's a cost thing if there are more than four computers in my house including other devices that may want to access online media.

1267685 2012-04-01 00:00:00 I've got a 4 port adsl modem and a switch with 8 ports. I took on the belief that if you can expand your network you can do it this way. I found out I couldn't do this because when I tried to expand my network for other rooms in my house, You can and it does work exactly like you mentioned. It must be a modem/Router.

your router has 4 ports, the switch has 8 - so from a port on the router you run a cable to port 1 on the switch, then ports 2-8 go out to other locations/rooms/computers. If you have a second Switch, that can go from another port on the Router to port 1 on the second Switch, that then gives you a further 7 connections - so from two 8 port switches you can have 14 active connections.

You can then add another switch to the third and forth port on the router + Switches, theres another 14 so running 1 router, 4 x 8 port switches you will have 28 connections.

To expand it even further, if you had the 8 port switch going to other 8 port switches you can expand it off of those.

Done a quick and very very rough drawing, showing a router, two 5 port switches ( couldn't be bothered drawing out more :) ) , but you'll get the idea. looking at that from the two switches you have 8 connections. If you then added the same config to the other two ports on the router you will have 16 connections.

1267686 2012-04-01 00:02:00 Did you connect a patch cable from the modem to the switch? You have to, if you want (whatever is plugged into the switch) to work. I have the same thing, a 4 port on the modem/router and a 5 port gigabit switch. Since, both of these have GB ethernet. And a patch cable going from the modem to a port on the switch. And the Bluray/Xbox is plugged into the modem (since they're 10/100 not gigabit) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1267687 2012-04-01 00:07:00 And depending on the age of the switch, you may have to use a cross-over cable between switch and modem. decibel (11645)

1267689 2012-04-01 00:36:00 @WainuiTech Haha, thanks for that. Yeah I did it again this time from scratch and it works. Really appreciate your help there. I'm using my internet connection from the switch now and it works a charm. undiejuice (16495)
1267690 2012-04-01 00:37:00 To everyone,
Thanks a bundle. I don't know why it didn't work for me in the last weekend, but it does now. So works a treat. Thanks for your help. :)

.

Wireless.

Routers - switches. Not modems.

1267692 2012-04-03 08:26:00 Is it correct that most modern networking equipment will automatically detect whether you're using a patch or crossover cable, and work regardless? forrest44 (754)
1267693 2012-04-03 08:45:00 In my experience, Yes. linw (53)
