1244716 2011-11-21 22:36:00 With the Election looming I thought let’s look at the achievements of the Key National Government .

Well, they started off by ignoring the referendum on the No Smacking Bill by claiming it was non-binding, even though 87 . 6% of the people wanted it repealed .

They upped GST to 15% on everything . Australia has 10% GST and unprocessed food is exempt .

They introduced Carbon Tax which along with the increased GST pushed our petrol prices up to 70c a litre dearer than Australia .

They pursued their Separatist Policies by giving the Foreshore and Seabed to the Maoris . They also gave them One Tree Hill, Mount Eden, Mount Maunganui (the mountain not the township) and so on . They have opened the backdoor for Iwi to negotiate further with Government directly, avoiding the Courts .

I understand they have now signed (in secret) the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People although having first opposed it as it conflicts with the Treaty of Waitangi and our other laws . (Personally I don’t believe the Maoris are an indigenous race but that’s another matter)

They promised 1000’s of jobs but didn’t deliver .

So that’s some of their achievements, feel free to add to them . :)

Now for the future .

Having given away the Seabed and Foreshore they now intend to sell our assets such as Power Generation Companies, Airline, Bank, Land, Farms, in fact all the silverware .

By the end of their next term we’ll be guests in our own country, the smiling assassin will retire from politics and you will be left to pick up the pieces .

They've promised 1000's jobs which will never happen because it can't happen . (See other threads)

So where does that leave us?

Well Nationals is now out, Labour’s out (we didn’t dump them last election for no good reason), Greens/Old Communists are out (we don’t need Luddites running anything), All the Race Based Parties are out, (we don’t need separatism) .

Doesn’t leave a lot now does it? :groan:

However, of what is left, I find that the New Zealand Party and the Conservative Party both share similar policies like, Crown Ownership of Foreshore and Seabed, Keeping our Assets, Repeal of the Emissions Trading Scheme, repeal of the No Smacking Legislation .

I note also that the Conservatives are in favour of all Referendums being Binding but not sure of NZ Firsts stance on that one .

All in all, it looks to me like the Conservative Party is the equivalent to the old National Party and for those who don’t like Winston they become a party they can vote for .

As for the Referendum:

Well we’ve proved that FPP doesn’t work which is why we dumped it and went MMP . We’ve found that MMP in its present form doesn’t work either, which leaves us with a choice of PV, STV & SM .

My present thoughts lean towards STV, what about you guys? :)

Winston always said referendums should be binding.

Isn't it time to get over lumping the Greens with communists? Anyway, our household will be voting Green and/or Labour.

STV would probably be fine, if the voters can be bothered ranking lists of candidates.

1244721 2011-11-21 23:05:00 Good post BM
I checked out PV, STV & SM and i thought they were all pretty similar so any is fine and if they alter MMP so it works is fine to

Its hard to see why United Future and Conservative party are not more popular......

One thing i cannot understand is why Key is going with Act, they are going to need way more votes to get in next time around

1244722 2011-11-21 23:07:00 Winston always said referendums should be binding.
Wasn't he a supporter of the "Go With Ex-Lax" referendum? That led to a powerful movement, and it certainly wasn't binding. :(

1244723 2011-11-21 23:08:00 The Conservative Party seem like an ok bunch, and I prefer the STV to MMP.

1244724 2011-11-21 23:19:00 STV or SM for me both are what MMP should have been from the start gary67 (56)
1244725 2011-11-21 23:39:00 The one thing I will say about this up coming Election is the lack of door knocking and the letter box being stuffed full of self promotional material .

Some of you will be old enough to remember the days when people from Lab and Nat and NZF and others would knock on your door trying to sell there version of Super or Extra Money for what ever there favorite pets for that election was .

And everytime you went near the letter box, there would be glossy shameless self promotional material blaming someone else for your lack of money or increased power and how things would be so much better off if you voted . . . . . . . . . .

Being with in the earth quake zone and having the young and lovely Ruth as MP always spouting off blaming National for the earth quake and what ever else, not single letter, advert or anything in the mail box screaming Vote For Me .

Nothing from anyone else either for that matter .

Remember when party members would go door to door checking that everyone at each house was enrolled . No one so far .

Almost seems like a low key, excuse the pun, affair this time, at least where we are .

Both are promising the world in some form, lets throw money at this group, lets create 1000's of extra jobs, well, Labour did that last time, almost all in the public sector .

And then the argument about whether to sell off the family jewels as well .

As for National wanting to reduce the wage gap between NZ and Australia, keep dreaming . Won't happen unless you are in a semi/professional position . Wages in Australia are not always what they appear, there are the high paying jobs and then there are the low end paying jobs . On the plus side, you get 9% employer super in Australia and can salary sacrifice extra money which reduces your tax bill .

National pushed up costs in NZ with the carbon tax and increased GST, remember, it was only going to cost everyone a extra $1 . 39 a week .

But then labour wants to introduce compulsory super, what is it, 4% of your gross and over time, 7% from the employer, that will flow on in increased costs . At least in Australia, you can salary sacrifice 4% which reduces your tax bill .

Oh, who to vote for . . . . . . . . . . . . the choices are almost unlimited .
