Higher education teaches you to think; you learn to understand and also to write intelligible english, you can express yourself verbally, and can communicate effectively . Arts degrees do not just produce artists, they produce thinkers and 'doers' . Higher (or any formal) education trains your mind, and regardless of what you then do with the certificate or degree you earned, you are a far more useful and versatile member of the workforce . The introduction of education for the masses freed humans from servility (go look it up) and I challenge you to produce a cogent argument to the contrary . Don't hurry, I'll wait . Cheers Billy 8-{) Well done Billy, you can be Metlas assistant in the Hogwash department . The records show that some of the worlds greatest achievers never held a degree of any sort and some of the worlds greatest failures did . For my part of the argument Ill nominate Bill Gates and Richard Branson as two international University dropouts that found they didnt need a BA . Locally, try Sam Morgan and Bob Jones as other University dropouts who have also succeeded without degrees . Further, I could name dozens that I know personally, and you probably wouldnt know, who have excelled in life and have the Dollars to prove it . Most were educated in the School of Hard Knocks and are Farmers, Orchardists, Super Market Owners, Contractors and so on . I have yet to see any proof that a Degree from Victoria University is the key to success . Your turn . :) |

| 1243976 | 2011-11-20 23:16:00 | So where is John Key and Phil Goff going to get these jobs that they reckon that can get people off the dole. John Key got that cycle track built around the country and said that there was 5000 jobs going to be created. Only about 500 jobs were created. | QW. (15883) | ||

That makes it first week of December, and I know from experience the job listings tend to die until mid-Jan. Sleepyhead in the news this morning too - more unemployed. They're increasing, not decreasing. And the two main party leaders can't do anything except snipe at each other. |

One thing I agree with Peters, he advocates a flat tax, which I think would be business friendly. Oh and it would gather tax off these bods that can avoid paying any. |

All governments can do is create the conditions for businesses to sell more stuff so that they need more staff. Absolutely Digby. When you get Iconic New Zealand Companies like Fisher Paykel moving their work to Thailand and Mexico I would think a responsible Government would address the problem. Not so, they never moved a muscle. And regardless of which Party promises 1000s of jobs, it will never happen until major changes are made to the Employment Laws and the Resource Management Act. Just another case of too little too late. :groan: |
