1244532 2011-11-21 10:01:00 They are there to show the State is committing itself to the revival and preservation of the Maori language through media (ie: Television).
It is costing the tax payer a bomb, while other channels are subsidised through private advertising, Maori TV is advert free.

Thats my :2cents:

There is a good reason why Maori TV is advert free - Advertisers pay for a target audience for their TV ads - that's what ratings are all about.

Who would pay to advertise on a TV network with a negligible TV audience

Maori TV claims the channel attracts 1.5 million viewers each month, half of all Māori aged five or more, and one third of all New Zealanders. Surely thats enough for advertisers to advertise on?

Yes but advertisers like affective demand.

1244536 2011-11-21 21:50:00 It makes no difference what channel they play anything on, there is almost nothing worth watching on TV.

It doesn't harm anyone having Maori language shows on other channels, you're kidding yourself if you think they would be replaced by anything good and they hardly play at prime time- we have endless reruns of the same 2 shows and a bunch of indistinguisable crime dramas / hospital dramas / sitcoms / and "reality" shows with no relation to actual reality for that.

If I had 1 show I liked to watch each night It would seem like TV Nirvana, as it is I have a handful of shows on the Tivos season pass list and only one of them is currently playing. Screw live TV I value my time more than sitting through adds.

I wait with anticipation for the day I can subscribe to a service and stream just the shows I want on demand, as it stands I believe broadcast TV's days are numbered unless they make some radical improvements.

1244537 2011-11-21 22:30:00 I can hear the Rev Paisley speaking... The idea that an Ulsterman can lecture other people on race, religion, or culture is risible! Go and sort out Ulster before you bring your brand of prejudice and intolerance here.

You are dreaming John H.:waughh: I was not lecturing other people on race, religion or culture. Not certain what you were reading, but it was not my post.

I simply stated that I fail to see why maori programming should be on TV One and TVNZ 7 when there is an underused moari channel that the taxpayer is funding. I don't appreciate having programmes on European channels that I do not understand and that has no relevance to me or the vast majority of this country's population.

The Chinese have two Chinese channels. They are not funded by the taxpayer. We do not see Chinese language programmes on TV One or TVNZ 7. If you want to watch a programme in Chinese you should tune to one of those channels. Surely that's the way it should be with maori programmes, then there would be no complaints from me.

Did you read the original post.Read it again. Clearly coming from a racist/redneck POV
"jabbering mumbo jumbo"
I dont like Maori TV or Maori programs, but being 10% of the population they have every right to ask for 10% of the
programming on TV1.
Having their own channel is not a relevant argument...the same can be said for sports, doco's, soaps, comedy etc etc.

1244539 2011-11-21 23:19:00 "Mumbo Jumbo" , by definition is "unintelligible or incomprehensible language", so for many, the Maori language may appear that way just as French, German, Chinese any other language apart from their primary language sounds like. I dont think calling a language mumbo jumbo is being racist and think thats a bit of an over reaction.

Ulsterman, I think you have been a bit misguided thinking TVNZ channels are European TV channels, it is a New Zealand TV for all New Zealanders, not just for Europeans in my opinion.

1244540 2011-11-22 00:08:00 @ Iantech. So is the Maori Channel only for Maori then? Snorkbox (15764)
1244541 2011-11-22 00:13:00 They have some good films on there, the rest is for the seperatists. Cicero (40)
