1243924 2011-11-17 09:21:00 When I was a teenager in the 1960s I had no problem finding a job because employers were looking for workers and there was little competition from other applicants. These days teenagers are applying for jobs and they often find that they are one of possibly a hundred applicants for the job. One of the hard things that young people face is knowing what they want to do and getting training and experience to finally reach their goal. Young people need to start at the bottom and work their way up the ladder.

Getting that initial job where they can start to gain experience is important. It may not be the job that they really want but at least they will gain work ethics which will give them a stepping stone for a better job.

I just took a minimum wage job, food on the table, and It will keep me out of the house.

Long hours, hard work, zero job certainty.

Awesome.

1243926 2011-11-17 09:47:00 Please tell me what an "Arts Degree" is for.
PJ

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) equips students with a number of important life skills. These include an ability to communicate clearly, an ability to think critically and creatively, an ability to solve problems across a wide range of domains, and general leadership abilities.

What makes the Victoria Bachelor of Arts degree distinctive is its strong emphasis on the humanities, creative arts, languages and social sciences, its flexible structure, and its broad range of opportunities for exploring a variety of disciplines.

The humanities include subjects where we explore what it means to be human; for example, languages, History, English Literature, Media Studies, Film, Theatre and Music. Social sciences include subjects where we explore how humans interact with each other, such as Cultural Anthropology, Criminology and Sociology.

Looks good to me, Its not going to give you a career on its own but it was never intended for that, and who can turn there nose up at a good education?

1243927 2011-11-17 10:00:00 IMO, if you don't want to be a specialist like a lawyer, accountant or IT for eg .. Arts degree can be helpful to get into certain jobs with a more generic nature. Like admin, some admin do get paid $80k PA depends on your experience. I also know those who became management analysts for both public and private sectors - very varied - be it projects, policy analysts, official correspondence writing for the behalf of CEO, or procurement, logistics ...... ..... But for those jobs IMO you can get into them without tertiary studies, just by experience.

IMO some of the commerce majors are like that too like marketing and management. Unless you gonna work in marketing and for management, you don't do a degree and be a manager :p
There are also some people who choose to do different jobs - I know a person who did a law degree but chose to work as a management adviser.
Many people just don't end up in a career of what they studied...

haha. BA - bull **** artist

So those of us without this degree are incapable of communicating clearly, thinking critically or creatively and can't solve problems obviously.

Some say it allows you to become an educated idiot, but I couldn't possibly comment.

1243930 2011-11-17 18:52:00 What most seem to have overlooked is successive Governments have reduced Job Opportunities.

They have done this with Laws and Taxes. It’s harder to Sack someone these days than it is to get divorced. Then there is ACC and all the other Costs and Form Filling.

You can’t call someone a Bloody Idiot anymore or you could wind up in the Employment Court for abuse or some other BS charge.

The outcome of all this is that the older Tradesmen won’t take on Apprentices and mainly work by themselves. Then later in life, having built up a client base and developed a reputation, they only work for certain people for Cash. Ahhhhhh, no Tax, no GST, no ACC, no Form Filling, no Advertising, life is good. ;)

Given that Necessity is the Mother of Invention, business people have invented the Black Economy which works very well and deprives the Government of Millions and equally stalls the Job Market.

So, before we’ll see any improvement in the Skilled Labour force we’ll have to see a good number of Labour Laws repealed and that ain’t going to happen.

Anyway, Key has a magic wand, or is it just Hot Air, we’ll see. :)

1243931 2011-11-17 18:53:00 Every student has "An Ability", but at what. There are those whose apitude is Trade & those whose aptitude is Higher Education in something. In my opinion that "Something" needs to be of use. Please tell me what an "Arts Degree" is for. There will always be a need for ManualWokers, tradesmen & skilled labourers. I mean, how many brain surgeons do we need? We probably have some of these from overseas here now driving taxis!!

Aptitude used to be assessed with the dreaded Examinations. 11+ & 13+ Exam tendedto determine the life path you took. Can anyone say in all honesty yhat all the Students at NZ Universtities intelectually qualify to be there? Yes I agree tha any child in NZ should be given the chance of a quality education & job. Not just an excuse for a student loan. PJ

One of the big things which surprised me when I moved here was finding out apprentices are not only asked to work for youth minimum wage but also expected to pay their own fees as well. I did my Carpentry/Joinery double trade in England and my employer paid my fees and was subsidised by the government for having an apprentice. I second that about Arts degrees, why do you need a degree to paint?

And the war against ignorance continues.

I suggest a BA for a start.
