1268214 2012-04-03 10:24:00 One task I need to do is set up an email client on my daughter's laptop - Windows 7.

I had a quick look at this when I visited her at university but Windows Mail insisted I use/obtain a Hotmail address. Neither she nor I want a Hotmail address although we'll do that if we must to make the thing happy. Still...I'm wondering if I've missed something. There are plenty of posts on the net about Windows Live Mail but oddly nothing particularly helpful.

Any suggested sites?

PS: yes I know about Eudora and Thunderbird but want to keep things simple for her.

PPS: maybe she should use Outlook since she has Office?

1268215 2012-04-03 10:28:00 You can use windows mail, the program that's in Vista. But you have to copy a working version of Windows mail off Vista 32 or 64 bit. (Since the version in Win7 doesn't work). And download some reg files. So it'll work properly. Other than that yup, you may have to use Outlook Speedy Gonzales (78)
1268216 2012-04-03 10:30:00 I just switched to Windows Live Mail today as Thunderbird has gotten too slow recently. I don't think it does require a Hotmail account (it asked before using mine) and Gmail setup is painless. pcuser42 (130)
1268217 2012-04-03 10:34:00 Really? I found that windows live mail was way too slow... Thunderbird was much better. icow (15313)
1268218 2012-04-03 11:08:00 I just set up Windows Live Mail on Windows 7 the other day on this new computer. Open up Windows Live Mail click on accounts at the left top of screen then click on the email icon and just fill in the appropriate boxes.

1268219 2012-04-03 11:34:00 Really? I found that windows live mail was way too slow... Thunderbird was much better. WLM certainly seems snappier at least. Though that may be the lack of addons... pcuser42 (130)
1268220 2012-04-04 22:35:00 A Hotmail account is not needed.
I set up a friends new PC (Win7) yesterday, and installed Windows Live Mail with her Xtra email account.
Xtra even have a support page guide with the settings for Live Mail.

(Mind you though, I clicked on the custom install and unticked everything but "Live Mail")

1268221 2012-04-05 00:45:00 If she has got Outlook then that would be the way to go, well it is as far as I'm concerned that way all her emails are actually on the machine and can be read even if she is offline gary67 (56)

1268223 2012-04-05 03:44:00 Thanks everyone for the prompt help as always, much appreciated. :D

Thinking about it I'm inclined to have her use Outlook even though personally its never been much use to me. It'll be worth having her learn about it and it uses Word to create messages. Can't understand why they are .pst files though?
