HERE
( . stuff . co . nz/national/politics/6023924/Weather-off-the-radar-on-Saturday" target="_blank">www . stuff . co . nz)

"Do not mention the weather and the election in the same breath on Saturday, whatever you do .

No weather anywhere in the country can be reported publicly and linked to voting from 9am to 7pm on election day, the Electoral Commission says .

The commission says that, under the 1993 Electoral Act, "statements such as `weather looks a bit bleak, turnout quiet at this polling place' would be prohibited as such a statement could be construed as discouraging people from voting" .

Section 197 of the act "does not just prohibit statements likely to influence voters as to who to vote for or not vote for" .

The act also prohibits any statement advising or intended or likely to influence any elector to abstain from voting, the commission said .

Any loose comment about sunny spells encouraging or discouraging voters could result in a fine of up to $20,000" .

What a bunch of . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

1245075 2011-11-23 18:51:00 Sorry, but you are looking at this the wrong way.
Kindly imagine what havoc could emanate from Wellington if the little gnomes that produce laws were allowed to wander at large in lieu of pumping out this drivel. Any other actions they may take would probably be more harmful than this, and definitely more expensive. Actually, the forecasts (either kind) are more likely to win a Booker prize than lose a court case.

1245076 2011-11-23 19:18:00 Its been proven that a bad polling day weather will lower the number of votes of the commie parties (greens labor etc).
In places like South Auckland and Porirua they organize driving people to the polling station who are too lazy to walk there. Thats a reason why SA always elects commie MPs.

Ahhhh I concede, you have a valid point R2x1 .

I guess you’re right in that whilst they’re turning out this Hogwash they aren’t doing more extensive damage elsewhere .

However, why can’t we just institutionalise them and deal with the problem properly . :)

Oh that’s right, they closed down all the asylums didn’t they . :( Cunning Sods!

1245078 2011-11-23 20:57:00 Another example of the stupidity of the lawmaking gnomes is the rule around election hoardings. These are required by law to be taken down by midnight of the day prior to election day. The reasoning is that if they are not taken down, a hoarding may influence/sway a voter on the way to the polling place.

Doh! if you haven't made up your mind before election day and/or you are so easily swayed that a billboard will change the way you vote, perhaps you should not be put in charge of a voting form!!

Besides, with advance voting opening up two weeks before election day, aren't the lawmaking gnomes worried that someone will be unduly influenced if they have to cast their vote in advance??

1245079 2011-11-23 21:05:00 Post voting means just that - the letters are opened late on election day, so the hoardings are down and being hoarded for three years. That means the vote cannot be read until post-election. The "post" bit may refer to someone confusing polls with poles, getting the wrong end of the stick and becoming stuck.

(Slow day here, I'm stuck awaiting a delivery so you all suffer :) )

You might want to check your facts, Papakura currently has Judith Collins as their local MP...

I, meanwhile, will be voting on Saturday come rain or shine - it's just a matter of whether we walk the short distance to the local church or drive if it pours down.

1245081 2011-11-24 01:06:00 Weather is always a topic of conversation. Adverse weather can cause people to want to stay indoors. This can mean that there are less people going out to vote or going shopping even. One answer may be to bring in Internet or postal voting. People would not need to physically go down to the polling booth to vote.

A local bus company in Invercargill got into trouble on Polling day last time around. The bus company was forced to use a bus that had Eric Roy's photograph on the back of it.
