1244821 2011-11-22 06:53:00 I have a HL - 2140, which stopped due to toner being empty.Laser printer.

Talking to mate, who had put black tape on side of of toner box, this was on to clear windows on either side., and blow me, it works.

1244822 2011-11-22 17:37:00 Yeah, we've been doing that for a while at work.

It's yet another way those @#$%^s that make printers try to rip us off.

A handy little window through the toner unit allows the machine to judge when toner is getting low (by measuring the amount of light from an LED getting through).
This is uesful in that users can be given a timely alert that they'll need more toner in a while.

However, they've universally applied the unnecessary step of making the machine refuse to operate once it gets to a certain point, rather than allowing the user to decide themselves when things get pale or streaky.

You can do many dozens more pages, if not hundreds on the remaining bit of toner... which would otherwise be lost / discarded if the manufacturers had their way.

1244823 2011-11-23 01:45:00 Just checked when I bought my replacement toner that is still sitting in it's box. 3 weeks (or almost a ream of paper) after the first toner level alert followed by the tape. When the print gets a bit streaky, just whip out the cartridge, shake it side to side a few times and it goes back to clean printing again. I suspect the toner has a parrot feature - cover it and it shuts up. The time between the low level lockout and actually running out seems to vary - for me over always 100 pages, but this time may be a record at 450 and still going. (I'm reusing the same bit of black tape too ;) )
Quite a good printer, but I just wish there was a simple way of applying a pointed stick to a suitable portion of the brother who decreed that every start up would involve a piercing shriek to announce that the shrieker still works.

1244824 2011-11-24 01:45:00 My HP1200 prints until it runs dry. I do the usual toner shake-down when streaking starts and can do that 2-3 times, then that's it the next time it streaks.

The point I'm making here is that there is no window to cover or anything like that, and no messages that it is running low, it just streaks. Similarly my Epson C1100 colour laser (bought January 2006) has been saying it has low Black toner for about a year now but it is still printing OK. It is still on its starter cartridges too, but I'll be buying a new one when it runs out of black or any colour because it is cheaper to buy a new printer than to replace the four cartridges).

Cheers
