1245686 2011-11-26 21:58:00 Wouldn't that mean they didn't vote in part B? I've heard of people thinking that because they opted to keep MMP they can't answer part B

I found it confusing when I came to vote in the referendum. There was an explanation on the form said that you could vote as follows;

1. You may vote in both Part A and Part B or you may vote only in Part A or only in Part B.

2. Vote by putting a tick in the circle next to the option that you choose.

No wonder they had informal votes.

Don't know how so many informal votes were recorded. I would have thought that if there was no vote in that section it would just not be counted not called informal? :confused:

Doesn’t say much for how the election was run though does it? :rolleyes:

But here’s another little laugh. Less than 6 votes were taken in 1222 polling places. :lol:

Is this a sign of a lack of interest?

If the ballot does not contain a valid vote, it's counted as informal - *all* ballots must be counted, regardless of their validity.

Is this a sign of a lack of interest?Partly, but there are also a lot of small polling places dotted around the country. Remember that New Zealand has a very sparse population in many areas, and so a low vote count in many polling places is to be expected.

1245691 2011-11-26 23:14:00 I voted for Winston. He is good value in parliament, keeps the others on their toes, sort of guardian for the public. He is also good to watch with a great sense of humour.

Agree. Bit of a maverick I suppose, been sacked twice from National, and been in (and out) of politics since the mid 70's. Does have a populist aurora/charisma or whatever. Tauranga and his home town (and mine) Whangarei had relatively high party votes for him. But can he be sacked from his own party? or replaced? Would the public want that?

1245692 2011-11-26 23:16:00 But can he be sacked from his own party? or replaced?According to his party's constitution, quite possibly.

Would the public want that?I suspect 7% of it would not!

1245693 2011-11-26 23:28:00 A person who blindly votes for a particular party without regard to either the party's policyand what is best for the country, or the quality and attributes of the candidate cannot be accused of being a thinking voter.
The trouble there Ken is what you think is best for the country isn't necessarily what some one else thinks is best.

1245694 2011-11-26 23:32:00 The media love Winston, but in reality, what can he do and what will he achieve in Parliament?

Short of sucking the taxpayers for another 3 years, he stands to achieve nothing - he is in the opposition - a waste of space...............
He actually achieved a few things in his previous terms like getting free doctor visits for the under sixes so I wouldn't rule him out because of your prejudice.
