1245665 2011-11-26 10:49:00 Looking at tonights results it shows that the f*ckwit factor is not only alive but strong and flourishing in the New Zealand electorate.

One can only hope that the MMP system gets the flick, it is responsible for bad unrepresentative weak government, and should be consigned to the pages of history. The Single Transferable Vote at least eliminates the f*ckwit element, and also puts paid to the tail wagging the dog, as has been the practice in the past. It also encourages people to think before they vote. A person who blindly votes for a particular party without regard to either the party's policyand what is best for the country, or the quality and attributes of the candidate cannot be accused of being a thinking voter.

It will be very interesting to see how the referendum pans out.

There are two improvements I would like to see in New Zealand politics:
Firstly, political recall - it allows an electorate to petition to recall a MP to face a by-election if the MP fails in his/her duty to those who they purport to represent, namely their constituents.
It exists and works well in several minor democracies, namely the USA, Canada, Switzerland and the Phillippines.(Google it )

Secondly, I believe there should be strict residency requirements for people nominating for electoral candidature - say 3 years of principal residence prior to nominating to stop the objectionable and undemocratic practice of carpetbagging, and this should be coupled to a system of a primary candidate selection by voters in each electorate. Let us have our representative being a true representative from the electorate, not a central party nominee parachuted into a safe seat, as all too frequently is the practice.

1245666 2011-11-26 10:57:00 The media love Winston, but in reality, what can he do and what will he achieve in Parliament?

Short of sucking the taxpayers for another 3 years, he stands to achieve nothing - he is in the opposition - a waste of space...............

Totally agree, grandstanding and freeloading on the taxpayers, sadly he isn't the only MP who is over competent at this.

1245669 2011-11-26 11:29:00 The provisional referendum count confirms that my earlier comment that the f*ckwit factor is not only alive but strong and flourishing in the New Zealand electorate.

MMP caused more problems than it ever solved, even taking into account the inherent unfairness of FPP.

The electorate have voted for a continuance of weak government, where minority voices and opinions over rule the wishes of the majority - The anti smacking law being a good example.

Well they have made their bed and now have to lie on it - if you didn't vote don't complain ever about MMP, only those who voted for any other system have a right to complain.

1245670 2011-11-26 12:40:00 Rather than only catering for the majority, MMP caters for EVERYONE (although not perfect, needs some tweaks). FPP is such a fail system, if we go back to FPP I'd seriously consider leaving NZ as I would lose my voice. Ridiculous.

On a brighter note... THANK **** ACT IS FINALLY DEAD.

1245671 2011-11-26 18:23:00 I gave my party vote to winnie, I saw it as a tactical vote to keep ACT out, as i think a lot of other people that voted for winnie. And thee plan kind of worked with act only getting one MP. I'm just hoping the maori party can apply enough pressure to stop the asset sales plod (107)

It's a bit like saying "oh Windows 7 had some problems, let's got back to Windows 98"

Not quite, but nearly. The Greens, however... :D
