1269345 2012-04-11 04:33:00 Hi,

I have an old SL400 Thinkpad laptop, given to me from work, with a 14.1" 1280x800 screen, which is showing a band of pink lines & green dots across the screen. I have been you-tubing and googling about how to replace the screen myself, and am pretty confident I can do it.

Next step is finding a replacement screen. Unfortunately googling turned up very little, and this was the only place I could find:
www.configraparts.co.nz $422.

Has anyone used Configra before? It looks like they are from Palmerston North, but the 4th result when googling configra is their ebay feedback page: feedback.ebay.com.au

Looking at their feedback items, it looks like their parts site is just reselling ebay stuff at a 100%+ markup.

This got me onto ebay, where I can order the screen for about $175nzd delivered:
www.ebay.com

I am not sure about ordering the screen off Ebay, or the Configra site. Both offer only a 90 or 120 day warranty, making it a moot point to order from NZ for warranty purposes, and paying twice as much for the screen. If anything does go wrong when ordering off Ebay however, Chances are I will be left with no screen or money.

Can anyone advise on where I should get the screen from?

But, only you can weigh up risks/value. If I was going to fix rather than throw out I would go for the ebay deal for what my opinion is worth.

Over to you!!!

You should be able to ( ie can) get the whole job done for $200 - $300

1269348 2012-04-12 00:07:00 If you get off an auction site, you need to look at a very specific model. Thinkpad will have FRU as their part numbers. For the Thinkpad in question, maybe download the service manual from Lenovo's site and research the FRU #s. If you get the wrong one even thou it fits, it may not work. For those in the know how, of course Lenovo does not make their own LCDs they use 3rd parties but b/c the general consumer does not get this compatibility info ... you get chinese whispers. One way of hedging a bet is maybe go to a laptop forum or the Lenovo forum and research if someone has done this same thing with your exact laptop they may have a list of compatible LCDs ...... or maybe just stick to Lenovo Thinkpad Model XYZ and or the Thinkpad FRU XYZ ...

If you google around there is also a site where they send out LCDs and provide video tutorials how you dismantle the chassis off the LCD and install the new "glass panel". But I think maybe $400NZ might be the going price for a new one or even $400US ....
