| 1269328 | 2012-04-11 02:04:00 | Annoyingly, my original post is closed, so I have to post my partial solution here . Some time ago I asked the question: [C]an I somehow make a shortcut that not only goes to the folder, but also subsets/filters it so that it shows only a specific group of group of files? For instance similar to how you might use "C:\[path]\m* . doc" in DOS/CMD to show only the MS-Word documents starting with the letter M, but doing it in the Explorer interface instead . The answer is still 'no', but there is a satisfactory alternative: Namely, one can add the /select,file_name switch, where file_name is the full path and name of one specific file . That file will be selected (as if you had clicked on it) and will appear at the bottom of the screen, therefore you can just choose the file at the end of the group of files you're interested in . It does at least save positioning . I have to ask, if the moderators would be so kind, why close a thread that someone might have had an answer to? You're not saving any room since the original thread is still there . Because it's old? But the internet is supposed to be a constantly increasing knowledge base, not just the latest news . When googling problems, I very often finds old threads asking exactly the same question I want an answer to, then I find the answer elsewhere or figure it out . This has happened several times to me recently, but then when I go back as a courtesy to the unanswered question, it is often closed, meaning I can't help out that person (they may still be around) or any other person who comes along later with the same question and finds that post . |

| 1269329 | 2012-04-11 07:00:00 | Threads with no activity for 3 months get automatically closed. This is a reasonable time to use as it is unlikely the user is still waiting for a solution. We had a BIG problem with people replying to threads found via google searches that were years old. You can always contact a Moderator to unlock a particular thread if you wish to add late, but still required, information. |

| 1269330 | 2012-04-12 07:18:00 | I have come across threads in other forums that are closed, if there is a period of inactivity, often for unique or difficult and hence unanswered questions. The thing I find a little unsettling is all that content gone to the providers of such forums or other types of web sites. I have read some owners used (as in sold to web enterprises) that content from members for their own gain. Huffington post, a user contributed news and opinion room is a classic example, and some article/blog contributor directories. They made big money, from skilled members contributing for free. Now NZ Immigration forums now closed. Valuable content...Gone. Who's going to benefit in future now? Not it's memebers to an extent... You cannot really rely on the open wide web in forums, and perhaps other web user contributor sites for archiving for future reference, even to help others. Sometimes it's not about saving space, but sometimes "noise" on the net. Tons of it exists, some warranted or not perhaps. Google and I think Bing, changed their algo's recently to display "freshness" which includes click streams for pages not so fresh, - if little views/traffic, from a authority domain, then deemed as fresh or relevant. Otherwise those not as fresh are pushed down the search results. Recently 100,000's of useless articles were deindexed, mainly from blog netwroks, and some threads from forums. The way to do it IMO, i.e. to help others and to reference back (i.e. by linking), is to refer your own material on your own site or blog. No one can take your content away (unless if copied without credit or "gamed" purchased for search engines). Your content remains to benefit others. Always. If not relevant, update or modify it. Can't do that easily in forums after a long time. |
