| 1268728 | 2012-04-07 11:18:00 | We are in the process of writing off a couple of very old Toshiba laptops. One has off memory a 320gb hard drive, the other is older again by some years. Both laptops are not operational. One has no screen display, could be a video card or what ever inside or it could be the screen itself. The older one simply no longer turns on. Neither are used and have not been used for probably a couple of years. I am considering the idea of stripping out the laptop hard drives and using them as external storage. Assuming I can of course use laptop hard drives as external storage, how do you go about it is the big question. Any advice.? |

| 1268729 | 2012-04-07 11:43:00 | It is not difficult at all. The hardrives will be just like normal ones but alot smaller and still use the same connections. Since neither laptops work just open it up and remove cables and screws until you get it out. | Slankydudl (16687) | ||

| 1268732 | 2012-04-07 22:45:00 | Chances are, the drives may be stuffed (fairly common with laptops, heat and vibration can kill them), might pay to get the adapter first, to see if they spin up/respond. There is a bit of a gotcha with the adapter, it wont supply enough current from the computers USB port to run/spin up an IDE laptop drive, you'll need a powered USB hub to power it (which is why the enclosure kits usually have a USB Y-cable to run the drive from two USB ports :)). By the way, I know you're joking, but dont use a hammer (that'll kill the drives for sure) :rolleyes: |

| 1268733 | 2012-04-07 23:53:00 | Just turned on both laptops, the one with the faulty video or screen, powers up and you hear the Windows musical. Not sure about the older one, you hear it powering but nothing else. Will have a play round and see what happens. Thanks |
