1247250 2011-12-05 18:59:00 OK - we're in Montana now - actually: Hamilton, Montana which is called the Banana Belt of Montana for it's temperate and gentle, less severe weather . Last night the bananas froze I think .

Some pixs before the latest small snow shower:: . google . com/vreeland . joe/AroundHome?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCP61zJuKxIKT2QE&feat=directlink" target="_blank">picasaweb . google . com

Sunday's report now, it's snowing a tad and just starting to collect on the trees and roads and such . It's about 3/4" deep and was still gently falling outta the white sky .

The temperature was at 36º F - so it melted away pretty fast . No wind to speak of as we are protected by The Bitterroot Mountains to the west that make the weather fronts go up and over us in this valley .

This'll be the first snow to fall on us so far if we don't count the popcorn stuff that fell a few days ago . It didn't stick either, although the temperature was at about 19º F and the dog's outdoor water bowl - actually a five gallon bucket - froze solid . We are warm and dry in the house with the wood stove going well burning 'lodgepole' and Douglas fir for firewood .

The wood's a little softer than the oak and avocado we're used to, but the lodgepole wood burns very hot and ashless .

Foods cost about the same here as SoCal . A really big thing is that there's NO SALES TAX on anything you buy . That's an automatic 12 . 5% pay raise for me on my fixed income .

Gasoline is somewhat cheaper - about $3 . 31/gallon here and there's NO Mexican foods allowed into the markets as it's not considered safe to eat with all the pesticides and hormones that Mexico and California allows in their produce .

Firewood is cheaper by far - $100-$140/cord+2 (or 3) and that's for the good-er lodgepole fir too . I'm used to paying $450/cord after the first threat of snow, and a little cheaper any other time of the year .

The snow stopped before noon today (Sunday) and is melting away pretty fast as I post this letter . It sure is pretty - and this is good snowball snow! It packs H A R D and crunches under your feet! But the temps are now in the low 40s Fahrenheit, so it will be gone soon . The sun's out and shining brightly too - so that helps .

I'll get some more pixs sent soon . The evening upload speeds are better than the day time and certainly a lot better than on a weekend where other people are trying to use their puters and stay home and warm .

Today's Update: Monday, Dec 5th::

The night temp dropped to 5ºF and the snow that's still here is rock solid . We had a huge fire in the wood stove, and it kept the house at about 79ºF all night . Right now the sun's back out and wee expect to get to about 32ºF today .

I have to get some milk and bread at the local market here and get ready to fly back to California to pick up my K5 Blazer ( . googleusercontent . com/-fSunn6Z_uf0/TmVkGQkSG2I/AAAAAAAAJmE/MQDnQLTNxN0/s640/100_8399 . JPG" target="_blank">lh5 . googleusercontent . com) on Thursday, to haul the last of my tools and gear up here . Since it's a 4WD, I don't expect any troubles coming through the high passes where the snow is over 4 feet and the temps are really colder . I have tire chains for all four wheels too - so the Mounties won't usually bother me .

Internet speeds here are slower (1 . 8/1 . 0) than I'm used to - (3/3), but I can live with it as long as it is steady and doesn't drop out with the weather . I sprayed the radio dish with cooking spray oil so the snow will slide off .

1247255 2011-12-05 19:41:00 Good to hear from you Joe. Looks a bit like the plains on our Napier/Taupo road here, that I have been driving over for 50 or more years.

Sorry you weren't around for us to give you a bollocking about why wasn't New Zealand in the World Series again this year!! :lol:

1247257 2011-12-05 20:04:00 I think I see your problem - you have the Sun installed to the South of you. Get the Sun further North where it belongs and it will flourish to reward you with more heat. Not only that, the sun will expand the days (giving you more daylight to get into wrestling matches with the weeds that flourish) in the warmth. R2x1 (4628)
1247258 2011-12-05 20:06:00 Good to hear back. I thought you got firewood for free before, as shown in your earlier photos. What's a cord? a metric volume? kahawai chaser (3545)

I don't think moving the Sun to a more northerly aspect is compatible (at this time of the year) with the usOS that Joe has installed....
