1247025 2011-12-04 09:43:00 It is my birthday on Wednesday and I decided to buy my own gift because the wife's gifts are seriously the worst ever (got 5 appointments with a nutritionalist last year!).

I have been looking for a new notebook (I am a developer) and see that this www.dodgybastards.co.nz has just come down in price, but i have never had an MSI system before. Anyone got any recommendation? Performance is important but after sales service in case something stops working is also critical because it will be the source of my income.

1247026 2011-12-04 09:51:00 I've heard the MSi wind is a very good netbook. Everytime I look at buying a netbook the wind is the one I always end up looking at. Haven't heard much about their laptops/notebooks though. Specs wise: meh it's a laptop. If you're a developer wouldn't a desktop be better choice? If you must go with a laptop I strongly recommend Asus. icow (15313)

Thanks for the link. Looks like it got a really good review, so I am going to get it but add another 8GB of RAM and replace the HDD with 2 SDD in Raid 0. I'm pretty sure this is going to give me the performance I am looking for. This price looks pretty good too.

As for the question as to why a notebook, so I can work on the go. Even though I do most of my work from home, I still need to see clients.

It would be good to get some feedback on MSI's after sales service though.

1247029 2011-12-04 21:23:00 Not sure of the price in your part of the world but for @ $1700 USD you could get this beast which will smoke that MSI (who make great notebooks to be sure). It comes with a lifetime limited labor warranty also.

I'm pretty sure they worded that like that on purpose. You can buy way more powerful laptops.

Good luck swapping the motherboard out. Chances are the CPU is soldered in too.

I recommend that. Better CPU than the one the Sager comes with (by default) and the gfx are still solid (for a laptop). Asus imo is the number 1 company to be buying laptops from.

Thanks for the feedback. The Asus looks pretty good but it doesn't look as if it supports multiple HDDs and this is a major performance improvement when running two in raid 0. BTW, it's a lot cheaper here: www.dodgybastards.co.nz

Are the Sager systems supported locally? Never heard of them before and as I have already said, initial buy price is one thing but after sales service very important. I have previously had issues with a major brand name and their local service agents didn't even want to talk to me because I didn't buy an extended warranty.

1247033 2011-12-04 23:45:00 That one has an i5 not an i7. Surely a single ssd would be better than HDD's in raid. icow (15313)
1247034 2011-12-05 10:10:00 You're right, my mistake.

I was planning to remove the HDD and replace them with 2 x SSD in raid 0.
