www.wired.com

"Though the software is installed on most modern Android, BlackBerry and Nokia phones, Carrier IQ was virtually unknown until 25-year-old Trevor Eckhart of Connecticut analyzed its workings, revealing that the software secretly chronicles a user’s phone experience — ostensibly so carriers and phone manufacturers can do quality control.

But now he’s released a video actually showing the logging of text messages, encrypted web searches and, well, you name it."

"A data-logging software company is seeking to squash an Android developer’s critical research into its software that is secretly installed on millions of phones, but Trevor Eckhart is refusing to publicly apologize for his research and remove the company’s training manuals from his website"
"Some carriers prevent users who actually find the software from controlling what information is sent."

"Adding possible legal jeopardy to its woes, a former federal prosecutor is also publicly wondering whether Carrier IQ, whose phone-monitoring software was secretly installed on millions of phones, was illegally wiretapping Americans’ communications.
University of Colorado law and telecommunications scholar Paul Ohm, a former federal prosecutor, said in a telephone interview that the software “verges on wiretapping.”"

1246761 2011-12-02 06:37:00 Everthing online is spying on you. I suggest you read the EULA's and T&C's for some programs. If andriod doesn't something else will. The denying it isn't cool and trying to hide it isn't either but it's nothing new. icow (15313)
1246762 2011-12-02 06:41:00 How unsurprising.

Glad I don't have one.

1246767 2011-12-02 08:30:00 It's not Android spying on you, but your carrier and the manufacturers of the phone. If you want to talk about spying then Facebook takes the cake. wmoore (6009)
