1247301 2011-12-14 00:07:00 So there is meaning to "white line fever". Recall seeing that movie when it came out in the early 70's-80's along with a stash of similar Peter Fonda/Burt Reynolds/Clint Eastwood "long highway" films, and similar highway cruise type US TV shows.

OK - an update ----------------

Since I just now woke up here in Hamilton in my own bed and still have 'White Line Fever' - I'll have to post more when I get my head screwed back on better.

I'm still seeing Rorschach patterns when I close my eyes --- and I think I have a head cold now too.

I need to get out of the travel mode and back into the being at home mode. It was hectic!

1247302 2011-12-14 05:44:00 Its what we need here, we have lots of guns here but we arent allowed to shoot crooks with them .

If your life, a member of your family, or anyone else inside your home fearful of loosing their life, by someone inside, or attempting to get inside your home after making threats to kill and they are armed with a weapon, be it a knife, machete, or baseball bat, I believe you are legally entitled to shoot them with a firearm in self defence .

If the crim is 3 sheets to the wind and only has a plastic knife from the local maccas . . . you may not get away with it .

Fortunately in the US, even though there are vast areas that are uninhabited and void of any humans living there, the large gaps of civilization are populated by a few gas stations and or motels at least every 200 miles - or so it seems .

One criteria for US auto makers is that they all have at least a 300 mile fuel capacity for the ability to get from one fuel outpost to another . Filling up the tank at every traveling opportunity is always a good idea .

When I know I will be crawling up some mountain range or a very high pass like The Continental Divide, I will fill up even if I just did so fifty miles ago . One can never be too safe . I think the longest gap in roadside services I've ever seen is two hundred, eighty miles . That gets dicey in a vehicle that might eat heavily .

One rule: Don't buy fuel at the first gas station one finds when entering a town or outpost . They will usually have the highest prices, as will the LAST station going out of town . Try to buy somewhere in the middle of whatever town one goes through .

Another rule: NEVER eat at a diner that has a sign outside it that says: EATS . Actually, some of the gambling casinos have pretty good (read: cheap) food though .

Well . we are expecting snow today - Missoula is supposed to get a pretty good load although I don't think it'll happen in any great quantity here as is the norm . We are overcast right now and that held the ground heat in so that we stayed quite a few degrees above freezing all last night . I feel that will keep any snow from sticking --- at the least .

Yes the beak or the jury will let you off, but the feld polizei usually charge you for the hell of it.

1247305 2011-12-14 20:47:00 Joe, I checked out whether my son has been to Hamilton. When they went north they stayed in Bozeman and Billings for some time. He also spent time in the Grand Tetons. When they came back they went through Missoula, and he is fairly sure he must have come through Hamilton on their way to Idaho. In the American scale of things, I guess that Bozeman, Billings, and Missoula are in your neck of the woods... He said "Montana is a strange State"... He mentioned the variety of environments there, and the fierceness of the climate... Also the wide range of rich and poor areas in the State. John H (8)

The most direct shot to Idaho, is through the Lolo Pass if one has been in Missoula. Hamilton is another 30+ miles south of Lolo. I know, since we went the same way from Lolo to Boise, Idaho - a place I would never consider moving because of the smog, high taxes and generally the rotten quality of life there.

Ask your son if a rather large river was on his left side (NZ= passenger's side of the automobile) on his trip to-through Idaho. I bet there was a river.

Everybody here is shaking their head and wondering how crazy I was for even considering going through the mountains I did when I drove up Route 93 the other night. I wasn't anything at all hard or dangerous as far as I was concerned.

Montana has a loot of very rich cattle barons here with multi-thousands of acres of beef and horses. Their homes are also several thousand square feet and I haven't seen any welfare recipients here yet.
