| 1247280 | 2011-12-06 07:25:00 | Takes me back Joe. I spent a couple of months over Christmas 1949 in the Butte-Anaconda area. Just over the road from my relations house was a baseball diamond which they flooded in winter to form a ice skating rink and over Christmas they erected a giant Christmas tree in the centre of the rink. Surrounding the rink was a number of small huts containing charcoal braziers for skaters to warm up. | tutaenui (1724) | ||

| 1247284 | 2011-12-07 00:59:00 | Well done Joe, that looks like a lovely place. My son loves Montana from his time there, but I am not sure whether he has been around the Hamilton area. I suppose you will now read all the E Annie Proulx books that feature Montana? Just don't read them if you are feeling low in the middle of winter... Looking at your property from the url you sent - given the size of the States, and Montana alone, how on earth did you find that property and decide to buy that particular block of land? In a country as small as NZ is isn't too difficult, but my mind is boggling at the scale of things in the States - the huge choice that must be involved in a search for an ideal property in the US of A... Tell us how you found that one? |

Looks like there's a decent Guitar Shop (www.outlawmusicguitarshop.com) in Missoula, is that about an hours drive from where you are? :) http://www.outlawmusicguitarshop.com/ Is Hamilton large enough for normal shopping etc, or would you be making a regular trip up to Missoula? |

| 1247287 | 2011-12-07 15:48:00 | You could come fishing here in NZ SJ - Summer's coming up. Here's a pic of a fellow Montanan (I think it's what a Montana resident is called; - if you call yourself one yet) with a Salmon from the South Island. Get them that big over there? As yet I haven't seen any fish at all. Don't want to really, until I can officially and legally open my tackle and gear and teach them what NOT to bite in the future. Mostly I fish "Catch-n-Release" as I don't really like to actually EAT fish. Takes me back Joe. I went through Anaconda - hard to miss even from the highway - as it has (I think) the highest brick-n-mortar chimney in the world which can be spied from miles away. That area is somewhat windier though and we eschewed considering it for a residence. We stopped in a rest stop there and I saw a logging chain blowing merrily across the parking lot. That really is the grand entry port to Big Sky to my mind. How's The Cat's welfare? :waughh: :devil Glad to see you made it SJ, have been wondering how things went........ and yeah i was wondering about that crazy claw thing called a cat ... how did it travel? The spot you now live in looks mighty fine............ Take care on your next trip and we await more updates soon. :) beetle :) The cat caterwauled for the first few hundred miles, grew tired of screaming, could only hoarsely hiss from then on and finally settled down to the indignities that her humans did to her and was quiet for most of the rest of the trip. I call her: Wheezer now, as she's still not quite vocally repaired. Well done Joe, that looks like a lovely place. It seems Providential I think. We traveled over 4700 miles in our quest to find a place to settle down, and this place seemed to have been an easy find. We looked at some mighty fine places, but one thing or another caused us to move on: 1) smog 2) taxes 3) fuel costs 4) food costs/quality 5) the view 6) shopping accessibility 7) lack of a temperate (sorta) weather 8) highways/road maintenance 9) average snowfall and hot days and 9) wind. Hamilton filled all those qualities in a positive way very well, although I really wanted to live in Darby. To move into Darby, requires that someone die and leave a vacancy. It's that hard to find a home there! So --- we are just a few miles North of Darby now, so that's a good thing In my opinion. Great to hear from you Joe, was wondering how things were going. Shopping here in Hamilton is great. There's over 282 stores on the community register of open and operating mercantiles. From Sears to K-Mart to JC Penny's to multiple large farm and ranch suppliers and sports outfitters to automotive repairs and parts houses - and coffee bistros. There are SO MANY coffee shops here that there's one every block, if not every corner of every block. Some are just drive-thru shoppes where one drives up to a window and orders their frappe or double-double-hold-the-froth cappuccino or custom roast. I drool a lot from the aromas. Coffee - alas and alack - is a no-no for me at the moment with my stomach problems. There are quite a few pawn shops though - more than I thought I'd see. They are full of guns and guitars and lots of things like snow tires on rims and generators and engines. Odd, that. We have to go to Missoula to do a few official things like get our vehicles registered and our licenses reset to the Montana address and such. Other than that, there's no driving need to go to Missoula for anything but the fun of it. It's only 47 miles away - and the roads here are straight as an arrow. Glad you made it Joe   One suggestion tho'. Don't be tempted to set up a twinning arrangement (en.wikipedia.org) with the Hamilton over here! Youse would only be the losers! :stare: Maybe we can just twin some of youse guys. Line up in a circle over there (--->), tallest first, alphabetically and we'll try to find matchmates for youse guys. I'm already looking for a matchmate for Metla. Might be tough! |
