1245831 2011-11-28 23:57:00 And following on from BBCMicro's " logic " post #13, conider this:

" The Babel fish " ,said The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, " is small, yellow and leech-like, and probably the oldest thing in the universe. It feeds a on a brainwave energy received not from its own carrier but from those around it. It absorbs all unconscious mental frequencies from this brainwave energy to nourish itself with.It then excretes into the mind of its carrier a telepathic matrix formed by combining the conscious thought frequencies with nerve signals picked up from the speech centres of the brain which has supplied them. The practical upshot of all this is that if you stick a Babel fish in your ear you can instantly understand anything said to you in any form of language. The speech patterns you actually hear to collect abrainwave matrix which is then fed into your mind by your Babel fish.

Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindboggling useful could have been evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of the non existence of God.

The argument goes something like this: " I refuse to prove that I exist, " says God, " for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing. "

" But, " says Man, " the Babel fish is a dead giveaway isn't it? It could not have been evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED. "

" Oh dear, " says God, " I hadn't thought of that, " and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.

" Oh, that was easy, " says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing. "

1245832 2011-11-29 00:08:00 And since I seem to be on a roll, here's an offering from the latest season of The Gruen Transfer (not available on NZ TV yet but I have my sources!). Personally I don't think it's one of their better efforts, but some of the advertising companies they approached actually turned down the invitation to sell the notion of banning all religion (www.youtube.com) tuiruru (12277)

To clarify a point, I don't think religion is a matter of proof or faith. I just think it a bit short-sighted to assume the folder representing 'me' is at the top of the directory structure

1245834 2011-11-29 02:51:00 I've just finished reading "The GOD Delusion" by Richard Dawkins and a more thoughtful, insightful, lucid and complete demolition of religions and all they stand for would be hard to find.

Regardless of your faith or lack of it, it is a book well worth reading.

After reading it there is no middle ground left to stand on and no room for prevarication. You are either enlightened or irrevocably obtuse. He makes Occam's Razor look like a blunt instrument.

I'm not a 'ist' or a 'ic', I'm a thinking breathing human

So does he deal with the fact the earth is only 6000 years old?

He give creation (and creationists) the same credence that he gives religion. You will have to read the book to find out exactly what that is of course. It is a seriously well written book with deep research and careful argument so it is not for casual skimmers.

1245838 2011-11-29 07:37:00 Funny enough much of the criticism of the book is that its poorly researched and written.
