1269622 2012-04-12 08:23:00 Beats me why people speak in absolutes about other peoples purchases.

Personally I can't see the point in buying a laptop that isn't capable of playing a game or three.

And almost every aspect of the Sager laptops are configurable.

And, hundreds if not thousands of dollars cheaper then lesser laptops on the market in NZ.

A laptop that can game is great, but there are tradeoffs of course, weight, for one - The guy wants something "easy to move around" - a big weighty gaming laptop isn't fun to lug around with you all day

Then you have cooling issues, laptops are always worse cooled than standard desktops, and generally noisier too. And because of higher operating temperatures, they usually don't last as long either.

That's why I think, unless you really need it, it makes more sense to get a desktop where the only thing you are losing is portability.

And if you need something portable, get a small laptop as well.

If it was primarily for LAN parties, a Mini-Desktop PC might be a better idea as dugimodo said

1269624 2012-04-12 09:03:00 Yeah a small laptop for the potabilty, a mini desktop sounds great. Get a gaming desktop unless you are really strong . ChazTheGeek (16619)
1269625 2012-04-12 09:27:00 All gaming laptops are basically overpriced for what they are (alienware/razer blade). You have got companies like Sager and ibuypower who can build extremely powerful laptops but for a cost. Desktops will almost always be better value for money when comparing equivalent specs. The problem with laptops that are powerful enough to run modern games on high settings and stay future proofed is the size, weight and battery life (when compared to say a 'standard' laptop) aren't very good at all. icow (15313)
1269626 2012-04-12 10:14:00 Yeah, I have to agree with many others. You're asking for 3 things that don't go together well, being:
1) Laptop
2) Gaming
3) Customisable

Laptops are foul for customisability, and if they do have a decent gaming processor they'll eat through the battery very quickly, so you'll still be dragging around extension cables, power boards and the power pack.

Unless you've got Kim Dot Com wealth, then I'd suggest a desktop with wireless mose and keyboard, just to reduce the cable clutter when moving it around.
If you've got any skills with particle board, screws and drills, then make yourself a case to hold the case, monitor, cables and KB when moving it around.

If you're seriously gaming you'll want to be using a LAN cable instead of wireless anyway, so you're still cursed with carting stuff.

In my opinion the only machine that properly fits gaming and affordability (from my persepctive) is a desktop with loads of room for BIG GPUs and big cooling.
Can't fit Ferrari motors and performance into VW beetles, no matter how hard you try.

1269627 2012-04-12 10:23:00 If you check out the alienware m18x it is quite customisable and it supports sli. The reason i need a laptop is it is easier than carrying a desktop every where. Carrying a power cable is easier than carrying all the wires and a monitor and case of a desktop. could any body that has bought an alienware laptop tell me what they think of it. stratex5 (16685)

It's true that any laptop is easier to carry than a desktop but be prepared to give your arms a good workout just the same.
