1269953 2012-04-14 03:19:00 Hi all,

I was just wondering if it was possible to get the wireless router (old faithful WRT54G) to connect to our ISP (via PPPoE) and then connect to a PPTP VPN? or even an openVPN server (not sure if possible, maybe with DDWRT?)

It would just save a lot of hassle on the client side since the family here have several iDevices that they use as well as laptops and teaching them how to enable/disable the VPN is going to be too much confusion/hard work. Having the home internet "just work" through the VPN is going to be easier.

Router is currently on stock linksys firmware but is DDWRT capable (if that is required to get it running)

Thanks

1269954 2012-04-14 06:12:00 Hi
a setup with the main machine going wireless through a 'ddwrt' router(open VPN) and a VM(on the same hardware) through a different router/modem has worked well for me in the past.

1269955 2012-04-14 07:11:00 Flash it with Tomato and use a Draytek DV120 in PPPoA -> PPPoE pass thru mode. That'll do everything you want :-) Chilling_Silence (9)
1269956 2012-04-14 09:03:00 I wish the damn ADSL router would dial it's own connections, that would save a lot of hassle. I was hoping I could do it with what I had at hand, the people aren't exactly technically minded and although it's a bit of a funny setup they don't mind how it works. Too much changing will over whelm them so I'll leave it as is for now.

Thanks

1269957 2012-04-14 12:39:00 The WRT54G doesn't do *DSL? Chilling_Silence (9)
1269958 2012-04-14 15:58:00 It will dial a connection from the modem (PPPoE) but can't connect using PPPoE and then to the server using a PPTP connection at the same time can it? The Error Guy (14052)
1269959 2012-04-14 20:49:00 You need a modem that will do half bridging (Linksys AM300 - Now discontinued), IP Extension (Dynalink RTA1320W) or PPPoE over PPPoA (Draytek DV120) this will then forward everything for the router such as VPN. I've used the AM300 with no issues, the Dynalink always drops out and requires a power cycle/reboot, and the Draytek is good except I get a weird issue trying to access a sharepoint site but hopefully that will be sorted with a firmware update. 1269960 2012-04-14 21:06:00 As Webbnzl said, yes it can but you have you have a device in front that will let it connect via DSL. Chilling_Silence (9)
1269961 2012-04-15 01:14:00 Since all the modem settings are in chinese... i'll leave it for now. I might fix it up next time in up here and bring some of the aforementioned equipment. It will be hard finding an english version of the hardware since they seem to have different versions for CN, unfortunately its not a simple firmware flash. That and the modem is a weird brand (SureKAM) so it's staying as is for now.

Thanks for the info though guys

1269962 2012-04-15 02:38:00 Nope, they're identical, it's all firmware-specific for the WRT54G's AFAIK. You'll naturally have to ditch that modem and use one of the modems we've mentioned in this thread, in conjunection with the WRT54G. Chilling_Silence (9)
