2012-04-13 06:31:00 | Hi Team This has been an irritation for several weeks now. I shut down my computer every night and when I start it in the morning, around 50% of the time I have no net access. Doing the simple "repair" cycle from the icon in the system tray fixes it every time and it is fine for the rest of the day. I am at a loss to understand how it can randomly fail to log on, then be OK after a 'repair', which seems to be no more than a refresh, and have no idea where to begin. Other computers running through the same network switch and router do not display this problem, so I'm picking it must be something in my computer, but I have not (intentionally) changed anything like software or configuration files that might affect it. The only clue I have is that boot up is apparently normal but there is a long 1-2 minutedelay before (I think) MSE is established (and I get a warning that the computer is unprotected) then it goes away and the System Tray finishes filling up, so it seems likely that something is wonky in the boot sequence. It is a nuisance more than a problem, but I'd like to fix it if I can. Comp is running XP Pro SP3 Cheers Billy 8-{)

2012-04-18 10:12:00 | Router is a D-Link DSL-504G and it probably isn't that because my old Portege Notebook works fine and another computer in the house accesses it too, all three via a D-Link DES-1008D Ethernet Switch. The computer is quite new and has been working fine until this appeared but I can't link it to any event. Network card drivers will be relatively new too. It is a nuisance more so than a problem and I've taken to refreshing it straight after boot to ensure that it is ready when I am. Cheers Billy 8-{)

2012-04-18 21:11:00 | Have you tried giving your computer a static IP address ? I have a older PC thats used as a file server that does similar, sometimes when I have to reboot it, and thats not often as it runs 24/7 normally, it wont pick up an IP, gave it a static in the network settings and it works everytime now . :2cents: | wainuitech (129) | |
2012-04-18 22:01:00 | Sounds like an overloaded startup sequence as you have two lag indicators (MSE and net). I presume you have checked the startups and hacked virtually all of them out? Another solution - don't shutdown. Use sleep! But still look at startups!!

2012-04-19 00:16:00 | Similar story - I am using WiFi and about every 3 or 4 boots does not connect until I repair. How can I find an IP address for my wireless adaptor - D-Link. At the moment TCP/IP is set to obtain IP automaticly. | Peter H (220) | |
2012-04-19 00:25:00 | Change it to use the following ip, and put an ip address in. Make sure its within the valid ip range of the modem | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2012-04-19 10:45:00 | Sounds like an overloaded startup sequence as you have two lag indicators (MSE and net). I presume you have checked the startups and hacked virtually all of them out? Another solution - don't shutdown. Use sleep! But still look at startups!! I always shut down at night. It saves power and gives me a fresh start every day. However, the possibility of an overloaded startup struck a chord as I had originally pruned it to the bare essentials. I took a look and what has happened since that pruning is that a whole pile of stuff has appeared there (see attachment). I recognise only a handful of entries so I would appreciate some advice on what I should prune and what I must leave. I'll keep a record of the necessities and keep a closer eye on it after that. It may not be the complete answer, but it will surely help. Cheers Billy 8-{) :thumbs
