1488283 2022-09-14 03:22:00 Yesterday 13 Sept all was fine. After Win 11 started downloading (not at my choice) I paused updates for 7 days, shut down and did a System Rest ore (fortunately I had created a new point 13 Sept) This morning, after 2 Msoft updates (NET Framework and Cum update for Win 10 21H2) Google Chrome will not open -either from shortcut or Start Menu. I logged on as Full Administrator but same result. When in Win Settings under Apps Google appears but the tab "Modify" is greyed out and only the Tab for Uninstall is available.

"Compatibility shows no options. I was on (64bit) v 105.0 5195.102 If I go down the Uninstall and redownload Google Chrome path will I lose my historical Gmail and Security settings including the dreaded 2 factor issue so I can use MS365 Outlook (pst)?

Guidance please

Thanks

1488284 2022-09-14 04:58:00 1st you need to clarify what OS you are actually running, ???
After Win 11 started downloading then
This morning, after 2 Msoft updates (NET Framework and Cum update for Win 10 21H2) you shouldn't be getting Windows 10 Updates for Windows 11.

Have you tried opening chrome in safe mode ??

Open a run command box, type in chrome.exe -incognito This should open Chrome in its basic form ( safe mode) if it opens then theres either corruption someplace or extensions causing the problem.
Edited: its not a true safe mode like Firefox, chrome doesn't have such a thing.

1488285 2022-09-14 07:02:00 Sounds like Win11 started to download then got paused, that could be causing issues. gary67 (56)
1488286 2022-09-14 09:08:00 Hi Wainui .
I am on Win 10 Pro (64bit) v21H2.(latest update) I did not select Download Win 11. This morning after I paused updates and then used System Restore point of 13 Sept I did an internet search and found several instances where people were moaning that Win 11 started downloading without them having selected it. Suggested fixes were varied and quite complex and the narratives showed sometimes not entirely successful.
I intend to move to Win 11 but when I choose to do so -not have MSoft force download/installation. I tried opening chrome in safe mode -no joy.

1488287 2022-09-14 10:51:00 Gary's post sounds like a lot like what may have happened.

Bit of a lesson -- when Windows 11 downloads and installs it wipes out any system restore point for W10, in the process W11 will make a folder on the C drive called Windows.old This is the recovery /wind back folder if required, BUT System Restore wont be included.

This is for any OS upgrade not just W10 / W11

What "may" have happened is it got to a certain point and any "recovery" is actually corrupted.

You can try opening a CMD as admin and run sfc /scannow See if it does any good.

You may have to rip out Chrome fully and run the risk of losing the settings.

Any bookmarks can be recovered from W10 or W11 by going to C:\Users\{User Account}\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default look for the Bookmark File and copy it out, The passwords, while in the same folder is in a file called Login Data, BUT normally wont transfer. A working Chrome you can export Passwords then import.

If Chrome is synced with other devices its easier as a new install can import existing details.

1488288 2022-09-15 07:38:00 Thanks for the input Wainui and gary 67.
I guess I should not be surprised. Tonight (without me doing anything else) Google Chrome is back. The only thing I had to re-create was my Desktop Shortcut.
thanks again for the detailed explanations

1488289 2022-09-15 10:44:00 "Sometimes" programs can self repair themselves, all depends on whats wrong. Could have been windows doing something or chrome may have still been running in the background and found faults.

Most browsers, firefox, Chrome run processes, more than 1 instance.

Open the browser - then task manager ( Ctrl + Alt + Del) look how many are running :)

Here's what I mean, I'm writing this Via Firefox, only PF1 open , chrome is only open to google search
