1488600 2022-10-01 23:37:00 That is sad news. I have had a lot of help and enjoyment on this forum. I will miss it. Pato (2463)
1488601 2022-10-02 00:25:00 This is out of my knowledge base, but can the Whole shooting match (Forum Here) be uploaded and transferred to a different Server ??

It could. But that would probably violate the privacy agreements etc and I doubt PCWorld would want the liability.

Discord is alright if people just want to keep in touch, but to actually ask questions etc, a forum of some kind would be much better.
Information organised in forum threads is easier to view and search and manage.

1488605 2022-10-02 07:56:00 Hopefully someone can/want's to set one up.

I wouldn't know the first thing about how to lol.

1488606 2022-10-02 17:52:00 The only problem I find with most other Forums is they have Dozens of separate sections. While this maybe OK for a specific topic, it also takes away the general group / community feeling. ( bit hard to find the right wording) but here there's two sections, HELP and Chat, often just scroll through both to see what others are upto and various questions, being separate sections doesn't allow this.

This is out of my knowledge base, but can the Whole shooting match (Forum Here) be uploaded and transferred to a different Server ??

This is possible... F1 runs on vBulletin, so theoretically, all we need is a dump of the current vBulletin setup. Also I agree that Discord would not be the right fit for the forum.

I'm a bit rusty but if I recall correctly...

1) the vBulletin files (stored on the server) and then there's all the attachments, avatars/profile pics/custom images etc - would depend if these items were stored on the server's file system or in the vBulletin database
2) The vBulletin database - which is basically, all the posts, threads, user info. forums, settings (language, styles etc.)

In short;

a) Backup the web site files (including the avatars/profiles etc if they are not stored in the vBulletin DB)
b) Backup the vBulletin DB
c) Transfer these files to the new server
d) Restore the website and then the DB
e) Bring the forum back online

For c), I would assume the "pressf1" domain would have to be signed over to whoever will run it and that would have to be a registered domain with the server host.

vBulletin has a subscription based hosting service (US$15/month is the cheapest I've seen) but not entirely sure how it all works.

Sad to see PF1 go, but as mentioned previously, we dodged a bullet last time 'round, so not surprising this has come up again.

1488607 2022-10-02 20:22:00 I'm just waiting to see who will set up another again. It didn't get much traffic last time, but that was because this was still here. Now it won't be, time to go back to it? Or whichever new one.

I don't use Geekzone, got banned for upsetting his opinion. Not a political post, just IT.

1488608 2022-10-03 04:53:00 This is the only PC forum I belong to, although I do belong to a NZ hunting and fishing one as well but that doesn't help with computer stuff. gary67 (56)
1488609 2022-10-04 02:46:00 I have checked in on PressF1 almost daily for yonks and it has helped me greatly. Mostly Kiwis helping Kiwis. Can't be better than that. PeterE (6851)
