1487870 2022-08-18 00:29:00 Hi all, realise this isn't really a computer based question but I know there are a lot of very knowledgeable people around here.

We have an older security camera system with 6 wired camera's that I'd like to upgrade. The newer systems seam to be wireless with batteries that need to be replaced regularly.
I was thinking of using the existing in ceiling wiring to carry power to the camera's, currently there are a couple of wires to each camera, video and what must be power. I could set up a power hub at the monitor end to distribute power to each camera to eliminate the need for batteries.

Is this an ok idea? Sort of sounds right to my pea brain but I may have missed something!

Suitable - affordable security camera and recorder? What are your thoughts and recommendations???

Cheers Dave

1487871 2022-08-18 02:50:00 I'm assuming old camera is coax (video based) rather than IP?

A lot of systems now using a recorder with network ports (ie I have one with 16 ports), and it puts power down the network cable (cat5) that it uses for receiving the video stream which is then recorded on a hard drive.

Jaycar will sell a system like this (conrad I think is the brand). And you can get coax (analog) based systems as well - which depending on connectors may be able to use your existing wiring.

You are better off, going with an PoE IP based camera solution....This will mean power to the camera and video data will be transmitted along a single cable as opposed to have multiple cables for power and video feeds.

This will mean power to the camera and video data will be transmitted along a single cable as opposed to have multiple cables for power and video feeds . 2nd this option, that's how mine are setup, they needed power of some sort anyway and its a LOT easier to run a ethernet cable and not having to worry about a wireless signal being in range .

The recorder powers the inside cameras, and the ones outside are powered by injectors connected to std Switch's linking back over the LAN (to tight to buy PoE Switches) :D

1487874 2022-08-18 05:04:00 if cables are not replaceable there is digital cameras which run over the coax cabling. not sure whats on the market here, there where made as an upgrade path for old systems. tweak'e (69)
1487875 2022-08-18 05:16:00 Heres the Big Question :D
affordable security camera and recorder? What are your thoughts and recommendations??? What is classed as Affordable ?? No point in suggesting $700 - $2000 + security system if its way over thought Budget ??

1487876 2022-08-18 08:14:00 Thanks everyone,
So probably want to send not too much more than say $1k.
Ok, throw some brands and models that can use the existing wiring for me to start looking at specifics.
I'll do a bit more reading based on your feedback given here but this looks a good start. I can see I have a bit to learn....
Once again, thanks.
