| 8412 | 2001-02-06 22:16:00 | Our computer is 2 yrs old. We run Win98 with all the latest upgrades installed. We have never successfully defragged further than 35% at which point the process freezes. We close all programs except, suspend every program in the system tray, select 'always on' power options and disable the screen saver and background. On advice we downloaded Power Defrag and ran it twice. The first time it simply cycled from 0% to 4% and the second time it froze at 35% as before. What now? | Guest (0) | ||

I will give you the same answer as everybody else, Defrag while in Safe Mode, never had a failure yet using this method. if your not sure how to get into safe mode , just restart your computer hold shift until you get past the splash screen and you are in safe mode. Windows will revert to normal mode upon restarting normally. Regards Alan |

Start, Run, msconfig (This program shows some tabs. The far right one is 'Start Up'. Try unticking some of these items. Don't worry, they will still be there to retick if you want them back.) 3. Get a program like 'WinTop (from ZDNet.com ?) so you can see ALL the programs & Tasks that are running. You can possibly select and end some tasks that don't show up with Ctrl-Alt-Del. |
