8819 2001-02-16 06:00:00 I am trying to install an extra 128Mb ram in my system to bring it up to 256Mb. However when installed i cannot get windows to boot. I get vxd errors, windows protection faults or if it manages to get to the desktop the screen goes black with a series of small green lines at the top. There is nothing wrong with the ram as it works fine in 2 other computers. The computer i am trying to put it in is a celeron 466 with a GA-6VX-4X motherboard and a GA-660+ both fron Giga-Byte. 8820 2001-02-16 08:25:00 I would imagine it would be different ram speed. Ram in PC's can be very picky. I would suggest taking out your existing (working) stick of ram and inserting the suspect one. If it works fine on just that one then I would say the 2 types of ram u have a incompatible with each other. One could be a 60ns while the other 70ns etc.. if u want better performance I would also suggest that you sell both working 128mbs and buy 1 stick of 256mb. Guest (0)
8821 2001-02-21 02:27:00 I do not agree, using RAM that is both 60ns and 70ns will cause all installed RAM to run at 60ns. Without researching further, you should check out your motherboards manual, the booklet, or online if there is one. Some motherboards have strange limitations and capacities with regards to RAM. Recently, i found out my Intel 815EEA motherboard Only allows RAM with up to 4 sides of RAM running at PC133 mhz. I have 192 Megs of RAM, using 2 dimm slots, 4 sides, if i add RAM in another slot, the entire set of memory will only run at PC100 mhz. As you can see, very strange. This also demonstrates how RAM can all slow down to a slower speed if needed (Or made to!), Just my two cents worth. Guest (0)
