8922 2001-02-19 03:08:00 I have been getting a 'virus like activty ' alert every time I open Excel (not an Excel file) and everytime I Save in MS Front Page.

Scanning the entire C drive (all files) produces no virus alerts.
Is this a 'false positive' alert - and how do I tell?

If I hit 'C' to continue each time is this safe?
If I hit 'E' for exclude will this catch me out later if a real virus attacks??

This seems to have started since I last downloaded latest Virus Definitions as I do each week. Could the latest update contain new functions or configurations that is confusing my older NAV 4 for Win98 programmme?

Should I update to a new antivirus programme anyway and which is best? - I liked Symantec right up to the moment they the decided to charge Aus$30 a support call recently...

many thanks

8923 2001-02-19 05:44:00 ...interesting. Your Nav4 software should be fine. May I suggest you check your Heuristic settings, they may be too high (??) To do this - open your Nortons and click on 'options' then 'scanner' then 'heuristics': try different levels of security and then replicate those actions which have previously given 'virus like activity' warnings. For more information on this 'heuristic' technology, check Symantec's Web site. Guest (0)
8924 2001-02-19 21:52:00 Thanks yours -
the Heuristics scale only gives you the option of low / medieum or high. It was set to medium and changing it to Low didn't change the Alerts.

One other thing to mention - Two of us on our network have the same alerts issue (both win98), the 'server' workstation on NT4 workstation doesn't.. owise we have the same NAv defs. and see the same emails.

I have done another V.Definitions update (manual download) but no change there.
I could hit 'E' for exclusions BUT this does make me nervous......
Thnks!!
