1270329 2012-04-16 10:03:00 Hi All,

Where can someone get a US Robotic 56k External Modem these days.

I have been to their site and followed links to our region etc

www.usr-apr.com

Looked at the dealer locator and even sent a few emails to them.

Had a few replies with no luck. Even emailed their Australian Pre-Sales support team via on line form.

Had a response to go and check out one NZ distributor . Still awaiting reply

Are they just not that popular any more or what?

Cheers

1270331 2012-04-16 13:01:00 I thought USR sold up many many years ago, but going to their website, see they are still doing it, good on them, they used to have the best modems money could buy. USR pretty much died out when Dynalink and D-Link started dominating the market.

I would just about think you will be pushing it to find an outlet in NZ (I may well be wrong though), maybe ebay might be the place to look and bring one in. Do you really need a USR one?

1270333 2012-04-16 22:07:00 I went to great lengths to get my USR ADSL modem (after frustrations at the flakey piece of #### that Ihug sent as a freebie), and even then, many years ago now it was difficult to find a retailer still holding any stocks. There were lots of listings, on sites that hadn't updated their stock level info, even sites that no longer traded had sites hosting their pages.

But why do you want an external dialup modem? At that speed I reckon any model should be sufficient for the job.

Dial-up modems have been near extinction for nearly a decade . They are still available, but only by a few manufacturers, typically cheaper brands as almost noone wants to pay good money for such an antiquated technology .

Why does it have to be USR?

NetComm do a decent USB 56k modem that retails for around $60 . That's probably your best bet . If you absolutely must have USR, or a serial modem (ugh! - upgrade!!), you'll find you probably have to custom order it from overseas ($$$) .

1270335 2012-04-17 01:28:00 in the home user market, dialup is dead.
but in the server market, dialup is often used for access to a pager network and other remote things.

and in that case you want good quality serial modem.
which often == USR modems.

we use USR5686E, at a cost of about $150 each. (brought 2 of them in January)
I think we got ours Via Gen-i

1270336 2012-04-17 21:30:00 They are for Alarm panel Up/Download software. I have tried Dynalink V1428VQE, Dynalink V1456VQE-R1 and a DSE XH1135 with no success even after fiddling with the init strings.
All are external serial modems on a Unitek USB to Serial (Model BF810Y Prolific chipset) also tried with a DSE DSNZ_XH8290 predecessor (with FTDI? chipset). All on Win 7 Ultimate which auto locates the "latest" drivers available from Microsoft.

1270337 2012-04-17 21:42:00 I'm going to guess they'll work fine on WinXP. Windows 7 handles some things, particularly USB-to-Serial conversion, quite differently. A USB modem, rather than using a USB-Serial adaptor may solve the issue. inphinity (7274)

Most people have ADSL or Cable now.

I would try TradeMe or eBay.
