Perhaps initially for the benefit of society at large, but it also exists to serve its own benefit as well. Much as governments, laws, and social norms all exist to shape our behaviours as well. Those that need to be most suspected are those that are in positions of control of each of these facets. Are they serving society, or serving themselves?	Paul.Cov (425)

Not at all. It is quite possible to lead a moral life without being fearful of or believing in one of the many versions of god. The 10 commandments are a mostly a useful set of rules which are followed by most people regardless of their belief or nonbelief in a god. If you wish to follow any religion you are more than welcome to do so but do not try to inflict it on the rest of us.	CliveM (6007)

You really think people didn't consider murder and thieving to be undesirable until a priest told people about a book of fairy tales that said an invisible voice from the sky said it was a bad idea? 1247829	2011-12-09 09:26:00	John Shelby Spong is a retired Anglican (Episcopalian) Bishop. He is not a Catholic priest. Naturally he has his critics but I must say he makes sense to me. I don't know anything about the guy but he doesn't appear to dismiss spirituality which is the one element missing from humanism. Interesting.	Winston001 (3612)

We are bags of meat. Look at human history, mostly consists of one group of people killing or being vile to another group of people. Or their own group of people. This is why every now and then some person comes along and invents a new religion, to try and keep the carnage under control. Never worked, that's why we invented cops.	pctek (84)
